1996 LS400: How to Remove The Infamous EGR Pipe
1996 LS400, with 210,xxx miles
1. Remove the Right Cat Converter
2. Loose and disconnect the Rear Joint of left cat converter.
The post-Cat exhaust pipe will drop.
Notes: Don't even bother putting the PB blaster on nuts of the rear joint of Cat Converter if they are original ones and were rusty, and not replaced before. PB blaster will not work. Simply cut the bolt, and punch the bolt out from behind.

1. Upper bolt and lower bolt of the upper end of EGR tube. Use combination of a 20-inch-long, 3/8 inch extension bar, a universal joint, and a 6-point, 12mm socket to remove the upper two bolts.

2. Two nuts of the EGR pipe lower end: Use a 12mm wrench to remove two 12mm nuts of the EGR tube lower end, the two nuts are right in front of your eyes.

thank you for this! PB blaster is always your friend when working with exhaust bolts. i have yet to do this but the pictures still don't give me that much confidence. i suppose i have to get under there and actually do it. now to find a 20" extender!
where is the other half of the pipe? did you replace with an OEM part or fix the old one?

even with PB blaster you still needed to torch it off, wow it must have been stuck!
off topic, is that your power wire for your aftermarket amplifier running under the car like that? the wire ran that way is susceptible to being scrapped from the pavement especially when lowered. here is a better option if you wish (check out the first few pictures):
