Default 1992 LS400 won't shift out of park

I did a Google search and ended up here.

I've had the car for about 9 months now and still learning the car. (I'm not very good with cars to be perfectly honest.)

My car won't shift out of park, the steering wheel isn't locked but one of my headlights is out. Will the headlight being out have anything to do with this? It was hard to get it out of park yesterday and now it won't budge at all. The car starts perfectly other than this.

I'm going to have a family member look at it (who is much better with cars than I am but not sure if he knows a whole lot about the Lexus brand) and would love any information or possible solutions I can pass on to him as we try to fix this.

did you try pressing the safety release to see if that helps?

This might be common sense but did you step on the brake before shifting?

Is the fuse for the brake lights blown? I'd have someone stand behind the car to see if you have brake lights. If not, your fuse is most likely blown and the signal is interrupted to the shift lock.

The most common cause of this problem is a defective brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal lever.

+ one on what Kansas said... I had the same problem on a 1995 Acura... replaced the brake switch and the problem was solved. I totally forgot that, that had happened to me... Could be and adjustment issue on where it is, or it might have failed all together...

Thanks everybody for the helpful advice.

We went to go work on the car this morning and it shifted out of park this morning w/o having to do anything. Very strange but I'm happy.

Were you pressing the correct pedal before?

agreed here. your switch could still be defective and intermittent if it's suddenly now works again. don't get stranded, take a look at the switch and inspect it.

just reading up on this issue cus it happened to me last night...
i moved my car from my parking spot to right next to the building and turned it off
after i came back outside to drive home, my car wouldnt go into drive
then i noticed my ABS is on...THEN noticed none of my windows or sunroof work
...in addition..my steering wheel is more difficult to turn and the car brakes poorly.

thinking its more than just the brake sensor tho

That sounds like a short. How did you get it to shift into drive?

I had to take off the plastic center shifter cover and wiggle that white tab/lever underneath...uggh

edit: ya its the ECU-IG fuse under the dash which was a 15
i just hadnt had the time to check all the fuses yet but that one fuse controlled:
ABS LIGHT
SUNROOF
ALL WINDOW CONTROLS
STEERING BEING DIFFICULT/HEAVY
AUTO HEADLIGHTS

What I found was water in the left pocket of wheel well in trunk...it had a phone system cable that was like what plugs into a computer...which had sat in water and shorted out fuse...this also had caused no volume on stereo and dash lights to remain on with key off and all symptoms mentioned above. Water in trunk pockets pull up carpet...remove plastic trim pieces.
