When ordering the Motorcraft FL-400S via Amazon
Amazon.com: Motorcraft FL400S Silicone Valve Oil Filter: Automotive Amazon.com: Motorcraft FL400S Silicone Valve Oil Filter: Automotive
It states that it is not compatible with our LS400, I have a '96. Is this inaccurate and they are just mistaken? Also I was noticing that the one I linked to on Amazon is claimed to not be the 'larger' filter and they apparently have shrunken the size from prior manufacturing. Any insight into this?

I ran that filter for a while on my 92LS. I switched over to Denso though. They are only about $4 from rockauto.

It is perfect for LS400 - as is every other filter I have specified in post #1 of this thread

amazon's silly little program just checks to see if it is the stock replacement, and I tend to use one size larger!

Only $4? That's amazing compared here in Japan. Amaon J sells it cheaper than others but still it is twice more expensive 840 Yen = about $8.

I often find OEM parts made in Japan much cheaper at Rockauto. I just wonder why.

I had the same issue when I needed an alternator for my Celsior. I miss Japan but I do not miss the prices. I finally got a used alternator for like $200. I think its mostly supply and demand. I noticed people in Japan just consider a car used up after 5-10 years and they end up in scrap yards. The other issue is not many people in Japan are willing to pay to have even an old Celsior. Road tax, JCI and insurance make it very expensive to own a fullsize car.

the Denso filter you are getting from rockauto for $4 is NOT made in Japan - look again!

I know it is made in Taiwan. Doesn't matter much to me. You should really see how much parts and things cost for these cars over in Japan.

everything costs a lot in Japan! - you have to pay the big bucks if you want to live in a zero-crime country!

PS - for those folks who want to stick with the made in Japan Denso filter and are not concerned with the cost, the part number to search for is 90915-20004 - a very nice filter indeed, and the one that came on your LS400 when new!

No, it's not. The factory installed one was 90915-20002 which was succeeded to 90915-20004 later on. I have never seen any filter printed 1501003 in Japan.

As far as I can tell the 90915-20002 was replaced by 90915-20004 which in turn was replaced by the current 90915-YZZD3. It is my understanding that the earlier ones are no longer available unless someone still has old stock.

I bought a carton of 90915-YZZD3 from Sewell together with motor mounts. Bargain.

Oh, I wasn't clear enough: the 1501003 p/n is Denso number. Take a look at this, they even list original Toyota filters as "alternate OEM p/n" for 9091520002, 9091520004:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...255&cc=1187456

ps. Funny enough the same filter is listed on Amazon, but it looks completely different, which I assume has more to do with Amazon than the filter. They have been known to post wrong images of products.

Look at this. The Denso filter 90915-20004 has two different pieces of metals at bottom side of it. The one you show us is totally different from that. The additional thin metal piece is aiming to hold the gasket well.

also the filter media is different as well as the internal design - I have split both of these filters open before, using my favorite tool! - Muhahaha!
