Default 98 Ls400, engine runs fine, but no power to the wheels

i got my car stuck in the mud. I gunned it a few times trying to get out. I finally had to get a tow.
Now my car's engine will run fine, but i put it in gear and get no power to the wheels. Not in any gear. While the engine runs fine, now there is another new noise coming from the back of the engine. Like a rotation noise, doesn't sound real good either. I imagine it is coming from around the fly wheel area. And while moving into gear, I don't feel anything. The check engine light is one, throwing a code: P0500, vehicle speed sensor A.

First things first, check the Transmission fluid level. Usually no drive whatsoever means the fluid is VERY low to empty.

If thats okay, check to see if the linkage was somehow disconnected from the transmission itself

If both of those are okay, then you may have much larger issues at stake somewhere down the driveline....

sounds like something broke when it got stuck, this isn't anything we can diagnose remotely. You need a shop to check out what happened. Something broke.

First things first.....
I checked the tranny fluid: fluid level is fine.
I checked the driveshaft linkage: everything looks fine, everything is connected .

Did the wheels spin when you tried to get it unstuck? When you shift it into gear, does the dash indicate that the transmission is in gear? With PD, on breakage.

my wheels were spinning, and kicking up mud. at first It was only at the end of trying to get unstuck that my wheels weren't spinning. then i stopped trying to get unstuck and got a tow.

When I shift into gear, the dash does indicate and light up with each gear.

Not sure what "with PD, on breakage" means. Please clarify.

How hard is it to remove the transmission?

he meant he is agreeing with PD that there is a breakage involved here.

so you see the dash indicator show the car is in gear, but do you also feel the gear engage?

transmission removal is like another other RWD transmission removal: pretty easy but labor intensive. you will need a transmission jack, unless you can bench 300lbs.

oh I see now about agreeing with PD. Thanks for clarifying.

I start up and put it in gear. And it shows on the dash and lights up going through each gear like normal. But now I do not feel it "engage" at all going in any gear. Before when it worked fine, I definitely felt it engage , especially in drive.

I don't have a "transmission Jack" per se. But my Dad has a motorcycle jack, that he uses with his Harley soft tail. Do you think that would work to drop the tranny?

If you have no experience doing something that extensive then doing it in a situation where you aren't even sure what's wrong is probably not the best idea...

I replaced my timing belt and camshaft oil seals on same car. But I don't have any experience per se with transmission work. But I didn't have any experience with timing belts either.

motorcycle jack may work but it's not ideal. a transmission jack has wheels so you can wheel it away from the car when detaching from the motor block.

if the trans is not even engaging, get under the car and see if the shift linkage is still attached to the transmission itself. the lever may be moving but may be disconnected.
