LS400TX,

I got mine changed at an independent shop using Lexus parts, with the timing belt, water pump, gaskets, idler arms and labor [might as well get it all done while you have it apart] it was about $600.00 Dealer wanted about twice that much, as I recall. You can ask this question in the maintenance forum and one of the techs over there can tell you what they quote their dealership quotes for this service.

Regards,

I quote the price at my local Lexus dealer about 2 years ago, it costs $1200.00 just for a T-Belt and waterpump (included labor).

But I design to get it done elsewhere when it cost around $600 for T-Belt, waterpump, and some others (I can't remember) and that independent shop gave me 1 years or 10000 mile warenty that cover anything that cause by the timing belt.

Hope this help!

Default Water Pump

How do you know when the water pump goes bad and when do you have to change the timing belt??

You don't know when the timing will be snap (2000 mile belt vs 50000 mile belt, they're all look the same). You just know that it needs to be changes every 60000 to 85000 miles.

And as the waterpump goes, the machanic can inspect it but usually when you change the timing belt, you might as well change the waterpump as everything already been taken apart (save on labor)

On 90-94 V-8 Lexus models, if the timing belt fails, you will of course be stranded, and the car will need to be towed in to get a replacement, BUT there will be absolutely no damage done to the motor.
On 95-97 V-8 motors, I am 99% sure the timing belt will not cause damage either.
98-present, I heard the belt must be changed because this is the year they changed the motor and incorporated the VVTI system.

How long will the T-belt last? Usually snaps after 200,000 miles!
So, if it was my LS 400 and everything seemed to be running fine, I would skip the T-belt replacement. When people replace their belts at every 60k miles, this is overkill and a complete waste of money.

About the water pump, the main reason it gets changed together with the timing belt is because when you install the new belt, the extra tension during and after the installation will cause the water pump to leak. But if you don't touch the timing belt, chances are, the water pump will not give you any trouble either.

Default ...or longer!

In fact, I have yet to see a post from someone who had a timing belt break!

There is one from a member whose water pump seized up, which snapped the belt, but that does not count- even a new belt would have snapped under those circumstances.

gs4to4 is right- the only consequence of the belt breaking is a tow job. And since you could buy 6 to 20 tow jobs for the price of a belt change, it makes no economic sense to routinely change the belt at the "recommended"intervals.

Default what about the '97 es 300?

does this advice go for the '97 es300 as well? if it's timing belt snaps, will it cause any damage? or will it result in just a tow to the garage?

You might wanna check with the ES forum, or do an advanced search on my name and "timing belt", and you should find a thread that mentions a web page put out by Gates Rubber Co. that lists what engines are interference or not.
