Default Intake Scoop Removal

I have a 97 ls400 and Ive read a few people have said they removed their intake scoop and it sounds good. Does it have any bad effects on the engine? What part do you remove? Is it purely for sound or does it help fuel economy at all?

I have searched and not found any answers....doesn't mean they aren't there it's just I didn't find them....

leave it how it is. it will not make it sound good. and will let warm air in from the enginebay. making hte car run less HP/ leave it be.
