Glad you found the problem! Pull-a-Part? I have been to a couple of great salvage yards in GA. The best was in Griffin. It was really hardcore. Right out of a Mad Max film. Not too many LS400 in those yards though. Especially, 96 and above.

A ECU from a salvage yard might also has a risk of leaking capacitors. If not leaking, they would leak in the very near future because those capacitors used inside Nichicon type PF contains infamous ”quaternaty ammonium salt compounds" which prone to cause a leaking problem.

When you repair a ECU, replace those capacitors with latest low ESR type ones. Some people are just selecting conventional type capacitors only seeing the capacitance and the voltage but the type is very important.

You are positive that the harness in the trunk is not all torn up? Watching your car run like that is painful. When you are taping up close it sounds like the engine has a bad cold and is blowing its nose...

I was thinking something similar. Maybe cam and/or crank sensor?

still no codes which leaves me to believe ive got a major ground issue, that and the way my lights are dimming till revved, timing is spot on mechanically, havent checked ignition yet because its obviously off. ive been instructed by another source this morning to try the cam and crank sensors as well....... thats the thing, the motor will run perfect intermittantly.

ok, so i had an epiphony......

the only time code 18 is used by toyota/lexus, in this vehicles obd system is for the no. 2 cam postion sensor.

granted i cant get codes from the CEL, i can still get codes from the trac and abs ecu, which in turn corresponds with each other, which also in turn correspond with the engine ecu. now, considering all this, the ABS light gave me a code 18. there is no other use for code 18 in the entire obd1 system for this car. how i got that code from the abs light is still a mystery, however, im gonna run with it.

ive already got the driver side cam angle sensor out, the passenger side looks to be a bit of a pita......

none the less, im replacing both of them. ill let you guys know what happens.
