Default ??? for those that have done their own valve adjustment

Just got a 93 LS400 and I'm in the middle of adjusting the valve clearance using the Lextreme write uphttp://www.lextreme.com/valve_clearance.html)

With the crankshaft pulley marker on "0" and the cam gears lined up with the marker on the head, which valves am I supposed to check first? I was under the impression that I would use the first picture:

then rotate the crank 360* and use the second picture:

My problem is when I do it that way, the peak of the cam lobes seem to be pushing the valves/shims down. I measured the clearances on the second pic with the timing marks lined up (crank and cam gears) and was able to get a measurement since the valve shims weren't being pushed down. Can anyone help me with this.

Here is a pic of the Driver side exhaust cam being measured AFTER the crank was rotated 360*. You can see that the peak of the lobe is away and the valve is uncompressed.

And here is a pic of when the crank/cam gears are lined up to their markers.

You will check the valves where the peaks of the cams are facing 180 degrees away from the shim.
