Default freeway speed issue

Was driving down the interstate between 75 and 85 and the car did a sudden jerk. Hard to describe but it was alot like hitting the rev limiter on a manual. I believe on my mazda when you would over rev it would shut the fuel off. I may also be thinking of the top speed limiter, that also would shut off the fuel.
It is a very pronounced jerk, happens intermittently, no warning and no way to make it do it all the time. Any ideas. I do not think it is the trany, when they slip the revs go up. Car is a 97 with 196k on it. Thanks in advance for any ideas! This only happens at freeway speeds other than that the car runs great!

I would suspect an ignition issue. Check the wires, caps, rotors and plugs for any odd signs. My thought is an ignition wire.
