You have air in the system. You need to bleed it out. Get it to normal temp, turn the heat up to max, and open the bleeder a little to let the air bubble out. The bleeder is the 17MM bolt on top of the thermostat housing. Make sure the coolant is full.

Would it make my temp gauge jump then go back down to normal temp really quickly?

yes, it could do that. How is the coolant level in the plastic reservoir?

Let's hope that there was just air in the system. Make sure you fill it back up with 50/50 of the same exact coolant that you have in there - it should be at the lower line when cold. Then keep an eye on it for a few days.

Yes the gauge will go all the way to hot and come down when there's air. If you had a mechanic do the job then you should bring it back to him. But, first thing to do is put some coolant in yourself b/c he might not have even put any back in when he drained it if the resevoir is empty. You don't want to cause any damage.

When I did my water pump change I noticed I had to fill the coolant in real slow. At a point I was just letting water trickle in. Turned it on, turned the heater to high heat full blast and held 2500 rpm for ten minutes. I let it sit overnight, did the same procedure the next day, and it was good to go.

It seems to me your mechanic failed to follow the correct procedure to refill the coolant.

My family and I have gone to this mechanic for over 30 years so I'm not sure why he didn't refill it back but I was able to get some coolant before any damage was caused. Thank god for the forum helping me out!!! You guys are great!!!
