Default fair exhaust prices?

So I'm thinking of having my exhaust done b4 I slamm my car. Stoped by a exhaust shop for a quote and they told me $500 for true duals. Is that fair or a total rip off? I don't care if its stainless steel or regular steel tubing. I just want it to sound nice and look nice. Oh ya, te $500 quote was excluding the cost of tips and mufflers.

That price isn't bad. The plain steel will be get ugly quickly, stainless is more resistant to corrosive conditions.

From what I can gather, there's no real power gain to be had through exhaust. If you just want sound, chop out the first set of resonators and run 2.25" pipe to your aftermarket mufflers of choice. That's what I plan on doing once I've stopped buying camera gear long enough to save the money to do it.

uhh i completely disagree, going from the (in my opinion) cheaply designed y-pipe and the FIVE mufflers that come stock to a well-made x-pipe and straight-through mufflers results in a noticeable improvement.

i would wonder about the type of mufflers being installed, and the price seems mediocre at best if they arent name brand nor including an x-pipe. true duals are old-school tech, and even most muscle car guys run X or H- pipes to aid scavenging.

I don't see how buying 2 mufflers and then tips on top of $500 to make the exhaust is fair. My last car I did a single 2 1/2" cat back and tint on a hatch back for $300. So how is $500 for just dual 2 1/4" w/ an x-pipe fair?

because more than double the tubing and 2 mufflers AND an x-pipe compared to a small hatchback.

500 is on the low end of fair too. generally I would see a standard aluminized steel setup with a pair of magnaflows go for ~$450-650 here in socal, crush bent. SS and/or mandrel tubing will obviously be extra.

If you want to save some $ and weight then do a single. That horrid crush splitter at the rear is quite offensive. Cutting that off and running it single will be an improvement.

Wow thats cheap compared to what I've been quoted. I asked at a local shop where the guy does awesome welding and he threw a 900-1200 ballpark for dual catback. Didn't really get into specifics on what the exhaust was going to be made of but I'd assume for that price it would be SS tubing.

yall are paying too much. just got my exhaust redone to a straight dual (all new piping from the 2 catylsts back. the only thing stock are my mufflers since im still looking for a nice quad setup. basically all 3 resonators are removed. i feel more power in the process. cost me only 150 at a local legit well known exhaust shop.

I got a half decent cat back made up, 2 1/2" piping, x pipe, mild steel, crush bends, I provided the mufflers, for about $350.

If you're going for good sound, don't run true dual.

if all you did was straight piping from the cats to the rear most mufflers, without an x-pipe or anything else I would say that when you add in 2 mufflers and an x-pipe you'll end up paying the same/more as most people do lol.
