Default 1997 LS400 bought for $900

i just bought an ls400 for $900. it has 228,000 miles. i bought it knowing it wouldnt pass smog. the nice lady i bought it from showed me which codes were keeping it from passing. it had a P0100 and a P0110. which were apparently the mass air flow sensor and the intake air temperature sensor, respectively.

when she sold me the car i was able to drive it (it ran slightly rough but not too bad) and the codes were clear. i figured it might be the spark plugs causing the slightly rough ride so i changed them out. the plugs were extremely worn and rusted. after replacing the plugs the car now runs extremely rough and after running it there is a strong smell of gas. the C.E. light is on and i am getting the codes that she showed me. is there something that could have gone wrong during the spark plug change?

my mechanic friend ran a few tests to clear up some obvious things.

when you disconnect the MAF sensor the car dies

when the obd II system is connected, the computer reads that the IAT is at -40 but it is like 75 degrees outside.

any information would be helpful before i spend $250-500 on a new MAF sensor.

I think you need to check Oxygen sensor ! Because the Oxygen sensor control the ratio of gasoline and air , may be oxygen sensors are bad and not burn gas completely. You can go to Advance auto parts get the O2 sensors (i suggest you buy online at Advance auto parts and pick up at store , use coupon to get 40% off , search online for code ) . good luck to you

What year? Oxygen sensors aren't in the game until the engine gets warmed up. The faulty IAT sensor is causing very rich fuel. Get it replaced.
