Default Car will not shift into certain gears (the gearshift wont)

Hey all,

I have a 2000 LS 400 Platinum edition with about 66k on it...

So tonight I started my car up to back out of the driveway completely(I normally just back up and go out front ways)....

I drove off and pulled my car into the gas station about 200 feet away and noticed the check engine light on....I tried to put the car in park only to notice the car would not go into park......it got to neutral and would not go any further up...I noticed when the car was in neutral and would not go any further the dash had both the neutral and drive lights illuminated...

I turned the car off and shifted the car into park and started the car again and shifted down into drive and drove off with no issues....drove 15 miles away and back like I was planning on and all but one time it would not shift into park or go past neutral from drive....if I wanted to go into park I had to turn the car off to go into park....turning the car back on I had no issue going into reverse or any of the gears from park....but once I got past neutral it would not go back up without turning the car off....

I am confused about this....any ideas? the gears when I go into them seem to function as normal and no issues have been seen or noted whatsoever.....the gears function as they should one I am in them....when I drove the car today no issues were exhibited....

Any ideas on whats going on or how to fix it?

did you spill something into the selector? sounds like something's wrong with the shifter itself...

Anybody has any clue on this one? Why in park would the car show both park and drive on the dash? If something was blocking the gate why would it shift there readily with the car off?

Is there some sort of sensor that tells the car that the brake is depressed so you can shift it into park from drive? If this sensor was bad wouldnt it not let you shift to park cause it doesn't think the brake is being depressed?

I have no idea. You mentioned a check engine light. Did you try pulling codes?

On the UCF1X it's on the right side of the transmission. I'd think it's in about the same spot on your's.

are you sure that that's the right code? afaik that's a code for a clutch switch..... What kind of reader did you use to pull the code?

if it is the neutral safety switch then it's not something that's out of the realm of possibility, though it isn't at all a common issue on these cars/transmissions.

Not sure the code puller the mechanic shop used.....it spit out this "Code 1708: PNP Malfunction"

The car drives normal in all gears.....the only difference is that it wont shift above Neutral in the gate unless I turn the car off....once I turn it off it goes to park....when I restart it it goes to reverse and drive gears fine.....and drives normal just once the gate passes to neutral going down it wont go back above neutral unless I shut the car off...

Question is the 1708 PNP Switch Malfunction and this part("Neutral Safety Switch / Range Sensor") on Rock Auto the same part for the 2000 LS400?

I don't think many people have had problems with their PNP switch. In fact the closest to a problem I was able to find was someone converting a 98 sc to five speed.

I have a 94 and took the PNP switch out. So I can't help you.
