Default catalytic converter change?

i have a 1997 ls 400 coach edition with 180k miles on it. I went to autozone and other auto shops to have my engine light checked, codes are coming up p0420 and p0430, bad catalytic converter, but after reading a few threads on here, i realized it could be an O2 Censor, is there any advise on how to diagnose with out changing both, and if it is the catalytic converter can i change it myself? Also, does anyone know where i can get a diagram of the catalytic converter?

search again. next to nil chance that both CATs went out at once. more likely that either the car isn't running right, an O2 sensor is dead, or (my choice) you have an exhaust leak or two.

thank yall sooo much, this is my second LS400 and first time on this forum, i am wanting this car to last me, i called around and people where quoting me $400 to change both, but if i can save a few pennies, i am more than happy too. would this be a simple day-2 day fix for a non car expert? or are they bolt-ons?

how would i go about verifying which one it could be? my car sometime idles at 200 at a stop, in drive, and there is a little rumble, but does not act like it will shut off, and there is a noise when i drive but i think it was from the previous owner driving it with low tire pressure for too long.
