Default Tie rod replacement costs?

I am looking at getting both my inner and outer tie rods replaced on my 1991 LS

I have been quoted at $380 for total cost of inner tie rods only and $550 for the inner and outer tie rods to be replaced including labor.

Are these decent costs or am I being taken for a ride?

The last thing that could be wrong is my rack and pinion but I seriously don't want to think about that..I was quoted $950 for new rack and pinion and outer tie rods total

You're being taken for a ride around the block at that price. You can do the outers yourself, it's incredibly easy, and the parts are about $20-30 per component.

Yes the outers are pretty easy, and the inners aren't too bad as long as you have the correct tool to get them out. The inners are about $60 and the outers are about $30. Those prices are for Beck/Arnley, at rockauto.com. You could get cheap outers for $20 but I wouldn't go too cheap with steering components. Too bad you weren't actually in NY, (like it says in your profile) I would do them for a couple hundred labor. But, does that price they gave you include an alignment?

I am about to do mine's, I think I am getting Moog tie rods, got quoted from a seller on ebay for $150 for all 4. Read good reviews on them, suppose to be good stuff. So, $150, plus cost of alignment (say $60), and 2-3 hours of labor @ $75/hr. So yeah, I say around $450-500 for everything would sound fair.

Thanks guys. I really love how there are no fair priced repair shops in the Cincinnati Ohio area....

I got that qoute from the average of 5 places. with the lowest being ten bucks less than the price I put up here

Yeah it all depends on where you are on what you're gonna pay.
Hey, you fixed your profile to where you live now. That threw me off before on one of your other posts with a pic. I was thinking, "that's not NY"
But anyway, if you can find a place that does labor only it might be better for you b/c most places will charge more on parts then what you can order them for. It's just business. Moog is a pretty good brand also, I've had good luck with them on other cars.

heres the DIY for rack and pinion replacement from the SC forums, he goes over the general idea of what you gotta do with the outer tie rods at the end of it, not complete writeup but can easily get by with it.

That's actually what you need, if you're just doing the outer tierods. If you do the inners there's an "inner tierod tool" to use to twist them out. http://www.harborfreight.com/automot...set-96558.html Doing the outers ya need to make sure you turn the new ones on exactly the same amount of turns to get them off.
