AC vent oscillator doesn't work sometimes

I noticed the the A/C vent oscillator on my '02 LS stopped working over the weekend when it was over 104 degrees here. It started working partially only after the cabin temperature had cooled down. Even then the oscillation only traversed half way each time. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

The oscillation in the new LS has a sensor that causes the air to be directed to areas that are warmer in the cabin than others. So, mabye the only oscillate to redirect airflow to warmer areas. I don't have any experience with these, but are they supposed to oscillate all the time? I don't know the answer, but remember hearing about the heat sensors in the LS on the Speed Channel.

I think...

If you don't have a front seat passenger.....

According to the 2003 Lexus brochure:

"The intuitive Climate-Control system of the LS 430 uses solar sensors, strategically placed temperature sensors and even a passenger sensor in the right front seat - all to determine where airflow is needed. Advanced, motor-controlled air registers and a special neutral-net computer chip work to eliminate hot and cold spots - making every spot in the LS 430 feel agreeable comfortable. If the system senses a passenger in the right front seat, it directs air to that area. But if it senses that only the driver in on board, the system redirects air to the left, heating or cooling that section more quickly."

Again, HoleinOne, I don't know the right answer, but maybe this information can help shed some light on the situation. You can always inquire at your Lexus dealer.

Thanks for the info. I think you may be right about the temp sensors. I will check my owners manual too.

You actually answered your own question. The vents don't start oscilating until the interior temp starts to get closer to the target temp in car. What your experiencing is normal. If only you could see the flow chart for the ac vents swinging. There are many patterns of oscilation.
