What's Wrong With This VIN?

Here is the VIN of my friend's LS400:

And here is the check from CARFAX:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...WSnap007-1.jpg
So it can be sure that the car was manufactured in '96, but at the upper right corner of the first pic shows 6/98. I don't really understand. Someone helps me, pls.

Along with the date discrepancy, the sticker says made in USA. All LS's are / were made in Japan...

LS430black Jun 22, 2011 09:34 PM

But the 1st digit is "J", which means Japan was the manufacturer.

I just did a search for the model number on the sticker and it says that sticker is from a Toyota Camry built between 8-1996 and 7-2001...

Do a google search for: " Model: SXV20L-AEPNKA " and you'll see what I mean...

Whoa! That was tricky- a Camry VIN on a LS400. But I don't know why the whole VIN was of LS400, they couldn't have glued up the 2 different-VIN peaces into 1 perfect piece.

Interesting, what is the VIN in the dash? How are the body panel stickers labeled?

PureDrifter Jun 22, 2011 11:24 PM

possible solution:
car was in an accident/repainted and they didnt have lexus VIN stickers (this being vietnam)?

LS430black Jun 22, 2011 11:59 PM

@RA40: The owner is checking it, I'm his friend. The label above was from the B pillar.
@PureDrifter: The case is in VN. If it were from another car VIN, the 17-digit line would also be from another car, not "Lexus" as listed by CARFAX. What is really confusing here is the mixed-up VIN info, I cannot figure out how they put all the "new" numbers (6/98, SXV20L-AEPNKA...) in the label and make them really clean, like it was original.

SVX is a 4cyl camry chassis code, and the date and all appear correct, but the vin is the oddity here...
i would check the other vins on the body of the car to confirm that is the real vin.

robert1408 Jun 23, 2011 03:27 AM

10th character of the vin is T, indicating a 1996 year model. That doesn't jive with the 06/98 mfg. date. The 4055 figure for the GVWR is 400-500 low for a 2 gen LS 400. The U140 transmission shown is not correct.

dont see the UF21 code.

DaveGS4 Jun 23, 2011 05:58 AM

Sounds pretty shady, definitely compare other VINs on the car

Look at the bright side, maybe he can get cheaper auto insurance :)

Check the vin on the dash to see if the 2 match up. Am guessing that they don't.

i wouldnt just check the dash, i would check all the vins possible. this is sounding very odd and sketchy.

There's deffinately something very fishy with this LS. Watch out b/c there are alot of shady characters out there. (chop shops) These stickers can be made up with some sort of label maker. There's also places that make replacement labels with just a picture. Like this: http://www.autodatalabels.com/place-an-order.html So if you can tape a couple together good enough to get a decent picture, you're all set. But like everyone is saying, "check all the other VIN numbers" Check dash, frame, engine, everything.
