Replacing the Air Cleaner in a 2000 LS400
Hey guys,
My grandfather's LS400 needs a new air cleaner so I graciously volunteered my services to repair it but I'm not sure if that was a mistake or not. Has anyone ever tried to tackle this job? The entire air cleaner system doesn't look too complex but I don't know if I should just replace all of the elements involved or some specific components: http://bit.ly/mds0Qu
Should I go ahead and replace all of the components as displayed in the illustration? Could someone please shed some light on the mechanical prowess demanded to sufficiently perform this job? Thank you very much in advance!

what are you "repairing" might i ask? sounds like you just need to replace an old dirty engine air filter for a new one. that's a ~5min job.
tools:
10mm socket or wrench.
Procedures:
1. remove battery box cover
2. unbolt the single bolt holding on the Air Cleaner Inlet No.1 (no. 17761 in the OPs image)
3. unbolt the front mounting tab of the Air Cleaner Assy. (no. 17700)
4. open the clip that joins the two halves of the Air Cleaner Assy. and split the assembly in hal
5. remove the front half of the assembly with the old air filter still in it.
6. replace the air filter with a clean one
7. reassembly is reverse of removal.
8. charge $80.

After taking a look at his air cleaner assembly, it appears as though the front mounting tab is cracked so I'll definitely have to replace that along with the filter itself. Thanks for the informative write-up!
P.S: I'm going to charge him an even $100 in the interest of adjusting for inflation

and so what if the mounting tab's broken, it won't effect the car working so unless your grandfather's one of those **** retentive "IT MUST BE PERFECT" types (doubtful, as he's having you do it and not say, a dealer, or a tech) then there's no need to replace the intake..

I got at least 20 bungee cords holding various plastic parts of my 96 LS together, mainly the bottom engine cover (or what's left of it). Will one of those do the trick here?

What, you're gonna charge your grandfather $100 for a 5 minute job? And after everything he's done for you your whole life. You should buy him the air filter, it's only $30. And you said "I graciously volunteered my services to repair it" Man, I sure hope my grandkids aint like that when I get older.
