Default '96 LS400 Tilt Steering Wheel Motor Inop

My local mechanic says my tilt motor assy is bad and estimates a $1000 cost with parts at $670. This seems high to me...is rebuilt motor assy available and reliable? Could a Lexus savy technician repair the tilt motor?

Can you hear the motor turn on but not tilt anymore? Or is it completely out?

I would try to find the most inexpensive source for parts, and do it yourself. Can't be too hard? There is probably tons of info floating around here and the www. How hard could it be.
Get er done and save some money.

Problem is these motors activate with every key insert and removal. Over time the motors wear out and the reports are they are not serviceable. I recently did timing belt and wp and had the key in the ignition with the battery disc. When I re-connected the battery my old and nearly out tilt motor gave it up.

Here is a link to the motor on an LS430. Same spot on ours. Two screws either side of the steering wheel (rotate wheel for access) and one underneath. I took off the C clip from the screw that the motor rotates for tilting and manually rotated it until the wheel lowered and I am just leaving it in place for now and maybe for good.

Thanks to JBrady for the site reference. My son came up with a site which deals with adjustment of tilt mechanism when motor is in working order. I do not think my motor is operative but I will check tomorrow. The site is: <http://www.youtube.com/user/jaredten#plu/1/Xgelzc9Uga4>
This site provides an excellent video of the tilt mechanism. Does anyone know where I can get the tilt motor at less than dealer price if I have to replace the motor?

Junkyards or salvage yards. Although those may be close to End Of Life themselves...
