1995 LS 400 Feels Like it is Starting in 2nd Gear
Greetings!
I recently posted the "throttle-shock" press release I found while scouring Google for answers about the issue, but I have another one as well.
I have noticed that my 95 LS feels like it is starting in 2nd gear (e.g., the engine revs at 2000 RPM but doesn't accelerate as such) in the following situations:
When the engine is cold, and I pull out of my driveway, put it in drive with the wheels turned
When I hard brake at a yellow/red light
When I come to a stop facing uphill
Is this a normal operating condition, or is there a problem?

i'm pretty sure 1 or 2 of your transmission solenoids have gone bad. Those symptoms are exactly what my car used to have. Got them replaced and now my car makes me say every time i step on the gas.

i had the same problem with my es, luckily it was the ECM and i found one on ebay for $35. it wouldnt downshift to 1st, i could manually put it in low, then upshift and had to for months until i figured wtf was up. swapped ecm and everything fine.
btw, the two solenoids are internal transmission parts

I agree with BAGYO, I recently rebuilt a 95 ls that was not running and had a supposedly bad trannsmiision. Got the engine running after a TB/WP change along with wires, plugs, etc. and the tranny was not working. Did a fluid flush/filter change and tranny worked but exhibited your symptoms. Checked all the solenoids and they ohmed out ok but #3 solenoid was sticking when I did the voltage check. Cleaned it and it worked and tranny ran fine for awhile.
It started having the same symptoms again so I'm going to get the #3 solenoid replaced shortly but the car is being painted right now. My suggestion is to first do a filter change and flush to see if symptoms improve, if it doesn't check out those solenoids. FYI the solenoids go 1,2,4,3 in order going from the rear of tranny to front of car. You may get some confusion if you run a obdII scan on it cause it'll say the solenoid problem as solenoid A,B,C etc. Hope this helps a little, all my work on my car has been thru these forums so I'm trying to give back a little. They've helped out tremendously but look thru the forums for answers first and you'll probably find your answer. Aloha
