Default Portable GPS mount location

I've been tired of getting lost, that whole male "I don't stop for directions" thing. I'd like to put a portable GPS into the car but the window mount is to me. Any of you with a portable unit...any pics of how you have yours done up?

I posted photos and information about the Magellan in my LS and the Garmin in the wife's Camry previously: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...tion-help.html

I'm thinking of replacing the aging Magellan in my LS with a 5" Garmin 1490T mounted on a Pro.Fit Universal G3 bracket attached to the top of the dash just forward of the middle of the center vents. If I do that, I will route the Garmin's power cord into the dash at the top of the center vents. A photo of the Universal G3 bracket is at http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/pro_fit/shopuniversal.html

That is exactly where I was thinking of putting it too or a bracket that sits just under the air vents. I've seen some vent mounts but I don't feel to confident in using them for fear of breaking the vent. Especially in a fit of pushing numbers in. I'll look into this and I'm sure it will be easy to fab up a bracket for the universal type mounts. Your install looks good.

The Garmin 1490 is priced nicely at Costco. From today's Costco ad beginning on the 11'th, the 1390 will be priced at $179 online.

Another alternative would be Garmin friction mount, where you can hook your GPS onto the friction mount and place it on your dashboard.

+1 for the pro.fit G3, need to pick one up for the '00 and maybe for myself, i'm just lazy when it comes to disassembling the console to drill the mounting points.

In past times, I would have had little hesitation to tearing the dash apart but now...I'm becoming less inclined. If it isn't too much of a PITA, I'll fab up something but largely plug and go is the preference. We'll see. If this were sporty, I'd hit up one of the guys to do some CF but I have plenty of titanium, steel and aluminum on hand to do something.

For those of your with aftermarket stereo/entertainment systems...Id like to see how your head unit installs look like.

A ways back I considered an integrated unit but the prospect of spending $1K+ for the head unit along with amps, speakers + install was too much. $$

I doubt if it takes 10 minutes to remove the center vents, remove the wood console/ashtray assembly, remove the four bolts holding the radio/HVAC control assembly in place and pull the radio/HVAC control assembly out of the center stack. I've done it numerous times on my own and other's LS400's. Are you guys going soft?

I've installed a variety of brackets where the bracket screws are hidden by the radios and have never had to use a drill.

That was nicely put.
Better I'll just get the wife to hold it during the whole drive. I bet that would go over well.

Lexkost's head unit looks like a clean install. Hey Mike...posts some pics up. I was almost hoping this GPS would have MP3 capabilities. Oh well...
