Default Looking to buy a 98 LS400, Any suggestions?

Hey All

Well some of you know I wrecked my 91 LS400. I have started shopping to replace it with a 98. I'm looking to get a car with less than 55k miles on it.

I was wondering if you all have any suggestions for certain thing to look for or to avoid.

Are there any none issues with the 98-99 that everyone has fixed. Do I need to ensure that this has it fixed already. Are there any things that are none to break around 45k-55k miles.

Are there any common things that may ware out or just fade?

Any particular options to avoid or to really look for.

I plan on NOT getting Navigation and looking for a Nakamichi with Wood steering wheel. I know that going to be hard.

Could you guys look in you local paper and let me know what there selling for around the country?

Thank you All very Much
Jerry

Smile 1998 LS 400

Horta:

Sorry to see your 91 LS wrecked, but maybe it is a sign of good things to come Glad to see that you and daughter made it out fine.

'98 LS do not come with the wood+leather steering. That was a feature started on the '99's. I have the Nav option, and I can tell you, it is a must-have.... I never really wanted it at first, but now that I have it, it has been wonderful.

The stock stereo in the '99 is powerful enough. The 7-speaker, 195 Watts output is great that I dunno why anyone would option up to the Nakamichi.... But if you must have it, so be it.

'98's with low miles around here in So Cal are going for in and around $30K +TTL. I will be surprised if you can find one with 55K miles and in good condition for under that price. If you do, grab it quick.

Good luck with your search. The LS is the best bar none...

Exclamation '98 LS400 FLA Wholesale #s....

Florida Black book wholesale on the '98 LS400:

XCLN: 30050
CLN: 29250
AVG: 25850
RHG: 21550

The '98s are quite a bit more expensive than the '97s...obviously due to the 30hp increase, HID headlights, avail nagivation, etc.

If you're not interested in the extra power, HIDs, and NAV then a moderate mileage '97 is a better bang for the buck IMO.

At any rate, I would stay AWAY from any LS400 with the air suspension---eventually it will fail and cost thousands to fix.

Good Luck,

Well All

So far I have test driven four 98 and two 97. I deffinityly like the 98 better. You can feel the difference in the horsepower but the main thing you notice is the throttle. Dont quote me on this but I know the 98 has an electronic throttle but the 97 feels like a traditional cable throttle. Basicly the 97 feels very simular to my 91. The throttle feels heavy and you really have to mash it to get the transmision to down shift and kick in. The 98 and newer feel much light in throttle pressure. Also the engine response is much quicker. I did not have to press the pedal as hard/deep to get some pep out of the car.

The interior are almost the same except the A/C vent are higher up in the 98s, I actually like the air flow better in the 97. The one thing I love in the 98 are if they have the wooden steering whell and shifter. It was an option and so far three of the four I have drive have the wood. Most of the one I have found on the internet have the wood. My goal now is to definityl get the wood.

I found the perfect car expect the wrong color. This is a Gold 98 with Wood, Nakamichi, cand ertifiedfor $34,500 asking price. I know he would have gone to $31,000. If it were white I would be writing you about my new car. It was Mint! But hey this was my first week of looking.

One of my best friend is a dealer so he is going to take me to all the big auctions. Two main one coming up are the Highline auction in West Palm Beach and a big one in Orlando. Hopefull I can get a great 99 still under warrenty for less than $34,000.

I hate spending this much money when I had a perfectly nice 91 that was all paid for but you opnly live once.

Jerry

Good Luck Jerry.

My '97 Coach Edition came from the Ochoee Auction in Orlando, and I have been very happy with it. There were some really nice LS400s there, and many are lease returns with 30-50K miles.

Best Regards,

Horta:

Very sorry for your loss...

I was looking for exactly the same thing four months ago. In the southwest, you'd be looking at at $33,000-$36,000 certified from a dealer, and probably $2000-$3000 less from an individual

I couldn't get one with the Nakamichi in a color I liked, but really wish I had. I think it depends on what kind of music you like. The Pioneer is really pretty loud, and sounds good on electronic music. If you like acoustic music (Jazz, orchestral, etc..., ) it is not good: very shrill, too much bass, too much treble, no middle. A rock-and-roll system, IMO. If I had it to do over again, I would have waited until I found one w/ Nakamichi.
