Default Ls400 Oil Filter 90915-20004

Ok well here I go ready to start another oil wars thread...NOT!

My 1998 LS400 is due for an oil change very soon. I am defiantly going to be using the oil filter 90915-20004 unless someone knows that this oil filter http://www.densoproducts.com/more_in...8250&pid=13964 is the same thing labeled differently.

While searching and learning about the 90915-20004 oil filter I found posts saying that the Toyota 90915-20004 and the Denso 150-1003 are the same thing decorated differently.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Also is there anywhere cheaper than Carson Lexus for the 90915-20004 filter?
http://www.l-tunedparts.com/product/index.php?id=2217

Thanks alot!

I don't think they are the same. See comparison pictures at the bottom of this post.:

According to that photo they are definitely not the same.

Thanks for that!

somnoboy by the way which oil and oil filter do you plan to use in your next oil change?

I'm asking because I saw the oil wars thread you created

Some years back, at the time the Yzz variant was replacing the 20004 there were discussions about which one was "better". The preference was for the 20004 but that pic seems different than the ones I recall. It has been a spell so PD or others can refresh me.

Given the drain interval of most users, the Yzz is sufficient and it is affordable. The only way to verify is to cut some open and compare again. By now, I suspect they have altered them. Even the 20004 may be different then and now.

You raise a very valid point!

I spoke with my local Toyota stealers today here in Mississauga. They apparently can get the 90915-20004 filter. I am wondering if it is worth the 15 dollars though..hmm someone is gonna have to sacrifice a filter...It'l be me

I think I may buy one and cut it open after the oil change and take some really good photos to find out whether the good stuff is really the GOOD stuff.

Good insight RA40.

Haven't enough photos of cross sections of these two filters been posted in past threads on Lexus Internet forums? I've been a Lexus LS owner for over 20 years and can tell you that it has been proven over and over, ad nauseum, that the switch to oil filters made in Thailand was a non-event.

At one time I might have sought a filter over another. These days so long as I do the interval I'm becoming less picky. My suggestion, save the $$ over the 20004 filter and buy Napa Gold at $6.50 or the current Toyota YZZ...

First, let me say that I had no intention of starting any "war." My only intention was to learn, just like you.

That said: there seems to be some consensus on these forums that the standard recommended Toyota 90915-YZZD3 filter, with Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic, every 5,000 miles or so, seems to work pretty well with the First Gen LS. Some seem to have developed a slight leak at the rear main seal when switching from dyno to the synthetic, but a possible solution seems to be switching to the Valvoline Max Life Synthetic Blend.

All this I learned from other very generous and knowledgable folks on this forum. I repeat it here for you, so that I may pass on "the knowledge."

Oh yes you YOU brought up oil filters in the first place.... Just joking with you bro!

I just threw that out there as a joke, I actually learned quite a bit from the thread you started and the very intelligible community members' inputs !

I have two of these on order for both of my LS's (400 & 430)... Not because I have any empirical data that they actually work, but it fundamentally makes sense to me that it would. I think these magnets, along with a YZZ filter and 5k mile oil changes should do the trick...

In that case oil analysis between the two filters. I ceased the whole routine since it became predictable. At least for ours, I know when to drain based on prior intervals where the additive package begins to drop. As with all these oil filter, oils, blonde, brunette...oh wait a minute, wrong forum...

YMMV

caveat emptor regarding gimmick filters....u do not need any magnets. do u honestly think theres an amount of metal floating around through ur engine passages? if the filter cant trap it then the filter isnt any good. get urself a wix or purolator one filter and go with a proven filtration...not some gimmick
