Default LS didn't pass safety, it's the end of it.

Unfortunately my winter car that I bought in June has not passed safety and is looking like it is going to need as much money as it's worth.

Needs;
Upper and lower ball joints
Rear struts
Rear steering rack is leaking
E brake
all new brake lines
New rear calipers
Engine is burning oil
Needs rear rotors

Turns out the owner before me has been using hot safeties for the last 2 years (and possibly e-tests)

He is a member here I just don't know his name, when I figure it out he will be definitely getting some poor feedback.

Not sure if I should just sell it as a parts car or part everything out myself. What do you think is going to get me the most money back?

Ouch, sorry to hear. Unfortunately, 1-gen LS's are not going to be very good buys these days. Just getting old and parts are worn. This is about $1,600-$2K in fixes?

If it is in otherwise good condition, parting it out yourself will probably be the better return if you don't mind the work. Me, I want to eliminate PITA so I'd rather not have a shell sitting in my garage or the PITA of having to disassemble it.

Very sorry to hear about your car not passing safety checks. Can you sell it to someone out of state/province who may not have the same safety requirements?

What are hot safeties and e-tests? I've never heard of them before.

I think he means the stickers must have fallen off the back of a truck. 4DGS sorry to hear this. What state do you live in with such strict standards. I've never heard of a car failing for leaks or burning oil.

Looks like he's located in Canada fellas, they must have a yearly inspection or something to that effect.

I vote for a video of you jumping it off a cliff or "see what it can do off-road" kind of thing if you know what I mean!

Actually a 'hot' safety is when you pay 5x or more for a safety inspection so that you car is deemed fit and safe for the road. It's almost like bribery.

In the US I think they put cars through a DOT inspection ...right?

Hm, would there be repercussions if your vehicle somehow failed in operation and caused damage (due to an obviously worn part)? Would the safety inspector be at risk for losing his license or something?

I'm just glad we have basic safety inspections: signal lights, horn, wipers, brake lights, headlights.

This vehicle has been legislated off the road by Gov.
Why think we are immune to such a future here stateside? Our politicians seem significantly tax drunk, blinded by power & "green-think" ecology crap to try this here in the very near future.

Think of how many vehicles are out on the road less safe than this 400?

i was wondering about the "rear steering rack" also.

imo i dont think its that much work (yes its more than anyone would like to do but its not much). you can easily buy all those parts at a local store and knock it all out in a day. the hardest would be the ball joints since they have to be pressed in.
