Default 1996 LS400 Rear Bearing Replacement

How hard is it to replace a rear wheel bearing on this model, I have a buddy that has a car stereo shop who says hes replaced many and he said he can do it for me for some computer work I did for him. I was planning on taking the car to my mechanic. Any special tools or equipment needed for this job, seals, grease. More than likely Im taking it to my mechanic.

Also, will I need just the bearing and seal, I hear something about a hub, is that an extra part, thanks.

Cars rear suspension feels completely loose and when I brake the rear goes all over the place, but there is no noise, took it to a Big Chain Tire shop and thats what they told me it was, they quoted me at 350 to replace.

I haven't replaced any wheel bearings on an ls yet but have done many other cars. Normally you have to remove the entire spindle and have the old wheel bearing and hub pressed out, and then the new bearing with seals pressed in. I normally just take the spindle to a tire shop with the new bearing and have them do it. If you have access to some tools I recommend removing it yourself and just spend the money on a new wheel bearing, seals, and fees for having them pressed in normally around 50 bucks depending on where you go. Good luck.

Whoa! If you aren't hearing a noise from the bearing, it's probably not the bearing... Do a search for "Adus 505" in this forum and on Google. The symptom you're describing with the rear end being loose is typically the rear strut rod and carrier arm bushing. There could be other components as well that are worn, but research those first.

How many miles on the car?
