Default lower control arm strut or just the control arm?

Ive done the search thing and been under the car enough but I would like to know if anyone here can tell me how to diagnose a lower control arm strut vs. just the lower control arm. (im low on funds and cant buy both for each side) ...... when you hit the brakes decently hard you can feel the thud and you can see the wheeland tire move forward and back. also when reversing then going to drive it clunks and thuds. Im pretty sure its the lower control arm strut but I want to make sure before I drop $200 for a pair and I am not sure if just the lower control arm would act like this...
thanks guys!
