Default Squealing from A/C

1997 LS400

Hi,

I'm having a strange problem that comes and goes. My A/C seems to squeal when I have the fan blowing. The noise never occurs when the fan is off, and it seems to only occur occasionally when the fan is blowing at low/medium speed, although sometimes it can happen at high speed.

It does it even if I turn off the "AC" button, so I don't think it's a belt in the engine bay. It appears to be coming from the blower motor.

Description:

*high pitched
*moderate intensity
*only happens with blower motor on
*sometimes seems to go away when making a left/right turn
*sometimes cycling through different modes and turning fan on and off and then on again will make the noise go away

I have a feeling something is trapped in the blower motor. Do you guys know how I can remove it to check?

Sorry to bump this thread. Does anyone have any idea how to get into the blower motor? Does the whole dash have to be disassembled? This is a '97 model.

Alldata says you only need to remove the glove compartment to remove the blower. It's located next to the cabin air filter.

Have you considered that the noise may be from the drive belt slipping when the compressor clutch engages? With A/C on and engine idling, raise the hood and watch the compressor clutch in relation to the noise.

The noise was there regardless of whether the A/C button was on or off. It was directly related to the fan being on or off.

I am speaking in past tense, because I replaced the blower motor with a $67 "Four Seasons" aftermarket blower motor today. It worked great! The biggest pain was transferring the old fan blade "wheel" from the old motor onto the new one. That thing was seized on there! I had to heat it up with a candle to get it off!
