Default Shock question

Can I just replace my shocks and not my springs? Do springs go bad? my car has 140K and original shocks.

2UX31 YM - I am normally on the GS board but have been thinking about an LS in my future so I have been starting to lurk here. To answer your question, yes, you can absolutely change shocks without changing springs. In fact, the vast majority of the time you will change shocks without touching the springs. Springs do wear out but they should last the life of the car unless something unusual happens. By the way, 140K on the original shocks, it is time for some new ones, it will make a big difference in the handling but don't be surprised if the ride gets stiffer, your shocks are just really gone and that gives a very soft, poorly controlled ride.

RON430 is correct!

Shocks are usually good for about 100k on most cars. I know Lexus is an exception to this rule SOMETIMES. Plus it all depends on how/where and types of road the car has been driven. Springs usually outlast everything else on the car including the owner LOL unless you haul a great deal of weight around which would make the springs sag. I would say with 140k on yours to change the shocks and leave the springs alone.

Thanks for the replys. I will replace my shocks. I have noticed a very uncontrolled ride over bumps. My rear view mirror air fresheners shake like crazy from side to side over bumps. My girl friend bought an SC and her parents bought an ES and both seemed to ride better than mine over bumps. Shocks it is. Thanks again.

Shocks may not be your only problems. Check out the shock mounts, A-arms, and ball joints as well.
