Catalitic Converter Repair

Hey! Need some opinions.

I have a 99 LS that need a catalitic converter. Should I go aftermarket or Manufacturer? I have heard that aftermarket is ok for some things and not others and wanted to know if anyone had exerience with converters.

Thanks in advance!

I had a converter replaced on my 99 LS under warranty and wished I had looked at it as I am not sure that the cat was faulty. More likely a gasket leak causing the OBDII to signal catalyst function problem. No cost to dealership for warranty so they simply remove and replace.

Stock cats are VERY high flow and are unlikely to fail. I would pull it off and inspect. If not clogged I HIGHLY doubt it is bad. Try reinstalling with new gaskets. If it does need to be replaced I would buy one of the inexpensive METAL substrate bullet type aftermarket catalysts, cut the flanges off the stock one and weld on in the correct positions.

Unfortunately salvage yards do not sell cats. Against the law I believe.
