Anyone have problems with their hood at high speeds?
Wondering if anyone else has this problem..
I have a 98 LS400 with the hood it rolled off the show room floor with. At about 90 MPH, I see the hood sort of fluttering in response to the forces of air being applied to it.. at about 135 mph, the hood is flapping so bad that it looks like its about to fly off or something. Anyone else have this problem? The top speed of this car is supposed to be around 175mph.... My hood is definately firmly affixed. It locks down perfectly.
Any fixes? Anyone else experience the same thing?

How long have you had it? When did you first notice the issue?
I'm wondering if it was in an accident and there is some sort of issue with the hood not being secured properly.
My only question is, why would you go faster when you see that the hood is fluttering at 90 mph?

Putting an LS on the track for those speeds is like throwing a brick into a wind tunnel. LOL!! The LS, while being a great luxuey cruiser, really is not an aerodynamic beast so you are pretty much upsetting the "refinement " of the car. All hoods shake a little in the wind(most un-noticable due to lower highway speeds). You may want to have your hood latch adjusted/checked to make sure that it is absolutely secure. 175 top speed in an LS,,not gonna happen without some serious mod. LS is governed to a top speed of around 149, though some have gotten a few more miles out of their cars, rarely above 155mph)

The fact that the hood is shaking so badly is a very good indication that there is DEF something wrong in his case. Wasn't saying that the LS couldn't handle the dynamics of the wind being forced on it, it just that it is not a sports car.

To me it's rather interesting that the drag coefficent of the LS400 is so low at .29.
Some quick comparisons:
Mazda RX8: .31

Honda NSX: .30

The mechanism that lowers my whipers down below the hood is broken.. I wonder if thats a factor? The hood seems solid.. it just literally looks like its flapping in the wind like a piece of fabric.
In that max out vid, the crazy ****er isn't even wearing his seat belt! The no belt indicator is flashing away. I didn't know these cars were governed.. Motor Trend lists them at like 174.8 or something.

Even the much lower powered gen 1 LS400 could bump against the higher UK/Europe 155mph (250km/h) speed limiter.
An unlimited 98-00 LS400 with its better aerodynamics, lower weight and higher horsepower should be considerably faster -- the 174.8 mph figure 98CLEAN mentioned isn't far off from what European car magazines estimated when the 98 LS400 was introduced.

Regardless of how fast an unlimited LS400 could go, getting caught or crashing into someone at 135 mph on a public road in the U.S. can be a life changing/ending experience.
