99 ls400 cat converter question...
hello i have a 99 ls 400 that the check engine light just came on ... lexus advised me the converter job would be about $900.00 i would like to know if anyone here has ever done or would reccomend a universal converter as a local muffler shop told me about 175 for universal cat installed... will the check engine light come back on due to universal or not...

have you had any symptoms besides the check engine light? do you run premium? How many miles?
I bought a 95 and the CEL told me both cats were bad. I cleared the code and noticed i had a small exhaust leak (rust) at the cats. I fixed the leak and the light has not come back on after 8k miles. Since your car is from the north, you might have the same problem. LS400's don't really have catalytic converter problems and i would bet most owners are on the originals.

cat inefficiency codes should always make you first look for exhaust leaks since they cause a disruptions in the readings the pair of o2 sensors on each bank gets.
rusted spots and dead exhaust gaskets are common causes of exhaust leaks. fix them and solve your problem. either clear the code yourself (using a code reader, or pulling the EFI fuse/disconnecting neg. battery terminal for a few minutes) or drive the car 200-300miles and it will clear itself.
and dont go back to the dealership that tried to screw you out of $900.
