Default Dashboard Lights Came On While Driving & Car Wont Start

Hi all,

I first experienced this problem about two weeks ago with my 90 LS.... when I was driving I noticed all the lights on the dashboard were slightly dimmed. After I turned off the car it would not start-up until I got a jump start.

Today, it re-occurred again (all the lights on the dashboard came on slightly dimmed) when I turned on the heat at full blast, I immediately turned off the heat and the lights disappeared. I was able to get the car started this time after the ignition was off.

I should mention that I replaced the battery with a used optima yellow top prior to the incident today (battery was tested no leak/discharge) .

Any idea what might be causing the problem? alternator maybe?

Did you replace the battery because of this problem?

I'd check for the common problem with the wiring harness in the trunk on the left side hinge, then check all grounds, then the alternator...

I thought it was the battery at first which is why I replaced it with the yellow top.

If your battery tests fine, yellow tops take a bit to drain,,have one myself, then it is your alternator. Sounds like your alternator is not properly charging the battery and your car is running from battery power alone until it drains. Most likely, if you havent fixed the PS leak, it is full of fluid and finally dead. You can have autozone test the charging system for free. Of course check all your cables/connections to make sure they are tight first.
