Default Cap/rotor replacement

I'm doing a tuneup on a friends 90 LS400. Already did plugs, moving on to wires and then cap and rotors.

Trying to figure out the easiest way to remove the cap. Looks like the timing cover has to come off? Can it be unbolted and just moved out a little to slip the cap off and back on? I read here that I have to remove the radiator hose? Is there no shortcut?

Looking to hear from someone who has done it. Just hoping I dont have to drain the coolant and all remove the hose.

nahhh you dont need to remove the radiator hose.

best way to do it is with a right angle screw driver

I just did this yesterday on my celsior.

The upper timing covers do need to come off - but BE CAREFUL with the wiring - make absolutely sure the cam position sensor wiring and the CKP sensor wiring is tucked into their retaining clips - or they will be sliced by the serpentine belt acting like a guillotine, and either the CEL will be thrown or the car will come to a stop or both will happen.

Also, there's a small hose/pipe that runs across the LH timing cover which links the t-stat housing and the surge tank that is a little bit of a PITA - if it helps you, drain the cooling system so that seepage is minimized.

Alright, I got everything done. Did in fact have to remove the upper rad hose, but left the t-stat hose in place. I drained the radiator just a little bit via the petcock and had absolutly no coolant spills. Removed the fan too. I was able to unbolt the timing covers but not completly remove them and slip the caps on and off.

That tutorial on lexls is terrible, Not exactly step by step.

Thats like saying this is step by step instructions to remove an engine.

step 1: remove all lines and cables going to engine

step 2: remove engine and anything attached

installation is the reverse of removal.

and you don't need to dump your radiator. I changed both dizzy caps and rotors the other day and didn't see a drop of coolant.

You will work it out bud, its pretty easy.

If you have to remove a radiator hose, then maybe you have a different setup to my celsior, I just simply pushed the hose to the side so I could get the bolt undone.
