Cracked woodgrain wheel repair
I have seen various threads regarding cracked woodgrain steering wheels. I recently found a place through another thread that was offering a discount to CL memebers back in 04 for adding wood to wheels that did not come with the option. I called them regarding the repair of cracked wheels, and was pleased to speak with Carter over at Craft Customs in TX, who was very knowledgeable and helpful. He went over the process and explained all the ins/outs of their procedure. Not only will they repair cracks in wood wheels, but also wood panels. Additionally, he explained to me that Lexus utilizes a thin epoxy coat, which the sun penatrates, hence the cracks and fading/discoloration. They actually sand it down to the wood, and will slightly dye the wood back to original color. They then apply a UV resistant coat, which he said is like the clearcoat on a vehicle. They actually do this for Lexus dealers in the midwest as well on trade in vehicles they sell on their lots.
Long story short, I purchased a wheel off of Ebay, which had 12 cracks on the top, and four on the bottom. The wheel now looks as good as almost new. The charge was very reasonable compared to what one other place quoted me ($150hr for labor, minimum 4 hours). Carter did the job for $180+ $20 shipping back, and will give any other CL member the same deal. Here is the link with their information and pics of my wheel before and after. Enjoy:
