Not sure what you are reading, every thing I have read puts this car in the low to mid 20s.

I just finished plugs and timing belt water pump on my 2000. Then I drove 90 miles on the interstate w/ the cruise set and the trip computer said I was averaging 30.7. FWIW

PS Yes Yes I know the car computers are not dead on.

To achieve such high figure you have to take into considerations a few elements including but not limited too:

Incline
elevation
wind
tires
engine maintenance and condition.

With so many possibilities for variation, its hard to pinpoint a cause for the mileage you are observing.
additional weight on the car... etc

I'm sort of a mileage nerd; bought my LS in part because at 20 mpg, it represented a 60% improvement over its predecessor, a '73 MBZ 300SEL (12.5 mpg). I get 21 in day to day suburban driving- mix of urban freeway and suburban roads. I've seen 27 on road trips down highway 101 in CA, which has more curves, hills and traffic than a pure interstate through the middle of nowhere. My guess is that to see 30, you would have to fill up, get right on the interstate and do a steady 65 or so, straight to another gas station right off the freeway. The minute you get off the freeway, your average starts to drop quickly. Watch your next road trip; a few miles spent driving off the highway looking for food, hotel or whatver will cost you. And the factors that Grand LS mentions will cost you too. Cruisng with 4 full sized adults (e.g. 800 lbs), as compared to solo can cost 1-2 mpg. Still, 27 mpg is pretty darn good for a big car. Look at the "real world" mpg figures in places like Consumer Reports and you'll see that lots of so called economy cars don't do much better.

120 km/h (cruise control), highway all the way (700km driven), I've got 9.94L per 100km = 10.07 km/L (that is 23.68 mpg , constant speed of 75 Mph)...

I guess not bad for a 4.0 V8

my last two highway trips i have averaged 29-32 mpg. The 32 was after a oil change, new air filter and new spark plugs. Tires inflated to 35psi. Used cruise control as much as possible and average speed was 65mph.

this is on a 00' LS400.
