95 LS400 175k miles

My starter woes seem to be a bit different from the starter issues seen thus far in this forum. I've researched just about all of them and this one irks me.

On occasion (worst when cold), while cranking the engine, the engine turns over perfectly fine for about 3-4 revolutions. On the fourth to fifth rev, I hear a grind noise (almost like when you try to start a car that's running) and the starter unengages itself and stops cranking, even if I don't release the key. If I crank it again, it turns over a few times and starts up perfectly and runs perfectly. The car always cranks.

The concern I have is whether this grind condition is only within the starter or something else. As mentioned, the car runs perfectly and it only does this occasionally.

I recently replaced the fan bracket after fouling up the bearing from washing the motor. Not sure of the possibility of getting water in the starter but I guess it's possible.

teeth on the flywheel could be chewed up from someone grinding the starter too much.

YEESH!!!

I'll pull the ignition coil wires off and crank to hopefully kill this theory.

pull the fuel pump relay, otherwise you'll flood the motor.
