My local parts stores only carry the Mobil 1 Multi vehicle Mercon V synthetic ATF. On mobil's website, they don't even list the Mercon V full Syn. They do have the Mobil 1 Full Syn Multi Vehicle which is approved for our trannies. Any thoughts on if I can use the Mobil 1 full syn Mercon V? Im just going to do a 2 qt drain and fill.

Type 4 is what is factory recommened I put in mobil one synthetic in my 91 lexus 9 years ago and have 212,000 miles and no problems. There are a lot of sharp people on this blog who don't think that synthetic trans fluid is a good idea in a lexus trans just to use type 4 trans fluid. if you are going to change your fluid change out at least 10- 12 quarts to get out most of the old fluid. Which ever oil you use get the tranny serviced at least 20,000 to 25,000 miles and if the transmission is in good shape have it fully flushed to get out all the old trans fluid to help increase the trans life. A guy here in Southern Califronia got 568,000 miles on his motor and trans on a 90 lexus all he did was to change the oil at least 20,000 miles on the trans and 7,000 miles on the engine. I recently did a huge service on my 1999 LS 400 (100K miles). Part of that service was flushing the power steering and tranny fluids.

I shopped around, studied, even called Mobil 1. I ended up using: Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF

It claims on their website: Also suitable for use in vehicles that specify the following fluid requirements: Toyota T-III, T-IV

I have run synthetic in the trannys of many of my vehicles, and have never had a problem. Plus, if amsoil synthetic is approved for the Lexus tranny, I figured Mobil 1 synthetic would work too.

I needed about 10 quarts of fluid to completely flush everything (the original fluid, at 100K, was UGLY - bought the car with 93K). I pulled the return line from the radiator until I had flushed all of the old fluid out.

With the tranny flush, it is quicker to downshift and has a slightly smoother 2-3 and 3-4 up-shift. To be honest, I don't think this is the synthetic as much as just having new, clean transmission fluid.

But, there have certainly been no setbacks by using the synthetic (now with about 1000 miles on it since the change). I was a little skeptical at first using synthetic, but the tranny is doing just fine. Just as good as before the fluid flush if not even a little better now.

The kicker for me was my Lexus dealer wanting $12.50/qt of Toyota T-IV and my local Toyota dealer wanting $8.50/qt. I know I could have gotten it cheaper online (probably around $5-6/qt), but it just ticked me off them charging that much. I found a sale at checker auto and got the Mobil 1 synthetic ATF for $7/qt.

I also used the synthetic ATF for the power steering (don't use power steering fluid) and the pump is nice and quiet. I used synthetic 75w-90 for the rear diff. I have been using the new Mobil 1 0w30 synthetic oil for the engine (and yup, you guessed it, a Mobil 1 filter!). At Walmart, the 0w30 and 5w30 are the same price for the 5 quart jugs, so I figured I'd have a little more protection at cold start-up.

After doing the tranny, power steering and diff flushes, along with an oil change, spark plugs, radiator flush, serpentine belt, timing belt, and all the idlers and pulleys... I expect this car will run well with no problems until my 200K service, not a bad trade-off for $500 in parts and a day of my time in labor.

I have had the LS400 for 7,500 miles and am averaging 25.5 MPG (hand calculated) with 50/50 hwy/city driving (tires at 32 psi). I love this car!!!

P.S. I don't mean to sound like an advertisement for Mobil 1... my family and I have just been using it for a long time and have been happy with it in all of our vehicles. I am sure redline, amsoil, royal purple are even better, I just like the cost/performance ratio of Mobil 1 products.

What Ever Oil You Choose To Use Dino/synthetic Make Sure To Change The Transmission Oil At 20-25,000 Miles.also Change The Rear End Oil Also So Many People Just Forget About It. Also Change Your Power Steering Oil At Least 25,000 Miles Or Sooner.

jcrome04 I was told that the type 4 toyota transmission fluid is semi synthetic why not go for the gold and use full synthetic trans fluid. BMW and mercedes and several high end cars including the 2007 Lexus uses all synthetic trans fluid in their transmissions. Also putting it in the power steering it help keep it clean and has been running great in my 91 lexus with 212,000 miles and no problems. What ever oil people use if they would only change it for the trans and power steering at about 20,000 miles your repairs will be far and few.

Toyota Type IV can be had for sub $7 at most Toyota dealerships. My least expensive dealer sells them at $4.79 with the average at $6.XX. I don't think you'll have problems with the full synthetics but with the other Dexron Mercon ATF's I wouldn't use.

lmao......i used valvaline dexron/mercon 3 when i had my tranny flushed...works fine
as long as u dont use ford or chrysler types u will be fine
