Question 94 LS400 Stereo went Dead? - Nakamechi Premium Sound System

94 LS400 w/285,000 miles. Hope someone can help me figure out what went bad. Stereo has had great sound until this weekend. Noticed that I had to turn the volume up to 3/4 level just to hear normal sound level. Turned car off and drove the next morning for about 20 min & had to use same 3/4 level volume, then turned it off and washed it, and when I tried to turn the radio back on, it was completely dead. No power, no sound, no lights.

Replaced the 7.5 Fuse and it still would not work. Could it be the amplifier and if so, where is that located and would it be less expensive to replace that or does it usually require replacing the entire headunit? I've read in threads that sometimes removing the battery cable for about 30 min and then replacing can reset codes or previous problems...any ideas if this or anytbhing else would work or what to check.

Thanks for any suggestions. Bad month and I think its just due to high mileage and mechanical/electrical parts wear out with this kind of mileage. Just had to replace my waterpump, timing belt, fan assembly bracket, idler drive pulley and soon need to replace my carrier bushings. Last month had to replace the steering rack. Hopefully I wont have to replace the sound system, its been great until this weekend.

Same thing happened to mine but my radio still has power. It just don't have any sound coming out of the speakers. I don't think our '94 have an external amp for the speakers but instead our headunit powers the speakers and an external amp powers the sub. If i can't find a simple fix to it then i'll buy an aftermarket headunit and replace the speakers also.

These guys fixed my Nakamichi when the sound in the right side channel completely died: http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremov...sLS400str1.htm

Service was fast and cheap and they kept me informed of what was going on. Absolutely first rate customer service.

I suggest you send both the head unit and the amp to them -- this will insure that the problem gets fixed.

The right channel problem of the Nak in my 00 LS turned out to be a loose connection in the balance control in the head unit. A similar problem could have been caused by a problem in the amp.

if that is the case then i will just buy another headunit, amp, and speakers. For a 94' i believe its time for an upgrade anyways.

Yes, in the 94 LS400 with standard Pioneer system the amp powers only the subwoofer. In the Nakamichi system for the 94 LS, the amp powers all the speakers. I'll attach the wiring diagram for the 94 LS standard Pioneer system in case that helps.

Oh i did not know that. I was thinking that it was the other way around. In that case i will check out the amp tomorrow. Which side is the amp on again? is it on the left side of the trunk?

It might be the amp in my car that is dead, that is why i'm not getting any sound.

If your 94 LS has the Nakamichi system, attached is the diagram for it.

I had the same problem with the radio turning on, playing, but no sounds coming out.

All I did was check the fuses.

The one under the dash was fine, however the one in the motor bay was blown.

I replaced it and it works good as new again.

Oh, and replaced the fuse with a stronger one.

Good luck!

The 93 Nakamichi system is the same as the 94 correct?

I'm having issues with speakers not working. I have front L and R tweeters but no front midrange, in the rear I have only the left speaker working. The sub works fine. Sounds to me like I may have faulty speakers.

EDIT: It was the speakers.

Mine also went dead. It would turn on work for awhile and then shut off. It finally wouldn't turn back on. I ended up buying an aftermarket stereo and mounting bracket including wiring harness so I didn't have to cut any wires. The whole set up cost me less than $90 (bought a used deck off of Craigslist) and sounds better than the stock stereo did!

Do you have a oem phone? If you do, try disconnecting it. Also check the connectors behind the rear seat. Here's a link:
