Crystal Clear red tail lights

Got bored one night so I stuck my tail lights in the oven to take them apart and see what I could modify inside them. If you take out all the reflectors, its pretty much crystal clear, but it looks pretty ugly to me. So I decided to just remove the reflector plastic from the middle row of lights... just something a little subtle/different.

Crystal clear... looks ok in these pics, but when you bolt up the bulb housings back on it looks like butt.

The reflectors for the outer tail lights are 1 giant piece, so I had to use my band saw to cut it into 3 slits, so that i can get rid of the center one.

The center tail light reflectors are also 1 piece, and to cut the middle out you have to cut it like I did in the pic...

Stock compared to finished modified version. Like I said, nothing very special, just a subtle/minor change...

so in that last pic.. the ones on the right side have the center piece missing? that is all? looks pretty good in the pic

Looks VIP! Good job manhttp://www.acurazine.com/forums/imag...s/thumbsup.gif

Yea thats all, nothing really THAT MUCH noticeable. The signal lights are a lot brighter now that the light isnt disbursed/diffused through the old reflector... thats about it haha

Hmm. So you had the tail light open? On the corner pieces...what part of the light was orange? Any way that you saw to maybe clear it?

Unfortunately no, the orange and red are actually part of the light so theres no way to remove it.

I bet If you wanted to smoke your taillights and still have good visibility that taking out the inside reflectors like that would really help. You gave me a really good Idea! Thanks

PureDrifter 09-09-08 01:39 PM

fyi, that makes smoked tails MORE illegal ;)

little touches makes a car that more special. all you need is a board full of leds for the bot and top pieces

Haha, its funny you say that because I was just thinking the same thing last night. I have almost all the things I need to make them in my garage, I just need to order the LED's and decide what dimming circuitry i want to use.... That, and getting off my lazy ass to do it :p OR I might go with all CCFL tubes behind the reflectors. My brother used to make CCFL angel eye and signal light kits for Audi TT's a few years back so I still have a bunch of inverters and tubes... hmmmmm

PureDrifter 09-10-08 04:58 PM

CCFL brakes are a hazard, they take a LONG time compared to LEDs and traditional incandescent bulbs to light.

thebeeguy 09-10-08 07:29 PM

Yea i was talking to my brother about it and he said use LEDs instead.
