Transmission fluid, draining & flushing (The Mother thread)
#242
Sounds like you are doing the whole flush where they hook the inlet/return line into a machine. I have done that once in 13 years Now I drain and fill every 6 mos. Looking forward to hearing how yours drives. Your old fluid should be visible in the machine if it is like the one my shop used - it was not pink!

Hobojoe,
The drain & refill % chart I posted may have given the impression I did not understand you were proposing a complete flush. That is not the case & my apologies.
Bought my 94LS with 117,000 years ago & went on this same course of action. I renewed every fluid I thought might have been neglected.
I have done the complete flush, all new fluid, on 2 different LS models.
I have recently been posting about experiences with my fathers 90 LS with 241,321.
I utilize places that have BG brand flush machines but that is a personal choice I suppose. Both times I have used the pre-flush they recommend prior to the procedure.
First time I did this Toyota of Plano advised me that their BG machine is kept filled with T-IV. A leap of faith perhaps, but I trusted them. It is nice not to have to show up with $50.00 of Toyota ATF.
For what it is worth I had some trepidation the first time around due mainly to what I read here. I got over it by round two.
Pops was skeptical, but is happy now.

Damon the information you updated on the WS fluid from Toyota is an eye opener I have heard some stories from the guys at toyota that several people tried to put in different fluid and the trans clutches went south. And toyota went ahead and replaced the trans under warranty can you picture that. I bought a 2006 camary till I see how the trans hold up on the new camarys and they are a closed transmission no dipstick and only the dealer can service them. Damon is lexus now using the same transmission fluid on the new lexus'

Interesting comments on fluid types and damage.
I have a 1994 with about 230,000 Miles. The differential fluid is stock,.. the Tranny fluid is about 20k old. Time for a change.
So,.. with you experts here:
I love redline fluids.
Could I use a Redline for my tranny and differential? Or would that fall into the potentially dangerous (damaging category?) --
If so, can I use it in both?
If not -- What is the exact fluid brand and type that the factory uses? Where is the best place to get it at the best price?
Online? A toyota Dealership? Parts store?
I'm asking so I'll know exactly what to ask for.. not just (I need some tranny and diff. fluid please) =)
Thanks

Toyota T-IV is the safe option
I have heard no confirmation that Toyota WS ATF is backward compatible with T-IV.
It is hard to imagine that it would not be since it is an extremely high quality tranny fluid but confirmation is confirmation & it has not been confirmed.
T-IV should be available at any Toyota dealer & we know it is what all model LS
transmissions would get at a Lexus dealer at this time.
I have seen substitutes that claim to be T-IV compatible but it is not a gamble most should feel comfortable with imo.

"WS" is for World Standard.
Toyota part # 08886-02305 will lead you to a 4L can & lighten your wallet by $40.00 or so.
It is a synthetic.
The 2004+ Prism's use it in their transaxle.
--------------------------------------------
Toyota Press release for the Tundra:
"Both Tundra transmissions use new Toyota "WS" (world-standard) fluid with a flat viscosity/temperature curve (cold viscosity is close to warm viscosity). This fluid reduces friction and wear, enables faster vehicle warm-up, and never needs to be replaced".

Did a little snooping around in the archives, is why I am bringing this post back to life.
I like most, am sure, need to change my tranny fluid. What do you guys think is the best option? Full flush or just drain and fill. I have a first gen and not sure if previous owner ever did any fluid changes to the tranny. Give me the pro's and cons of each option. BTW,, for those of you who chose to change your own tranny fluid and purchase the fluid from Toyota, here are a couple of pics. They were like $5.95 a bottle.

ATF Fluid for LS 1993?
Hi guys
After reading Lexls.com I read I should use Toyota Type IV (4) ATF, but my lexus dealer says it should be type 2
Does someone have an opinion on this?
Thanks
Daniel

You will find that Type IV is merely an improved version of Type II. One day you will look up and discover there is a Type V, which would then replace Type IV. As the product is enhanced, it follows that the enhanced version is the one you would want to use in your car.

This is the fluid you need to use in the tranny. This is the latest version of the fluid. I bought this from a Toyota dealer for $5.99 per bottle. This is the same fluid that your Lexus dealer will use.
