My starter (2000 LS400 Mark 4) was replaced at 130000 miles. It cost nearly £900 including labour here in England. It seems the life of an LS400 starter is around 100 - 150,000 miles.
Not for mine. First one at 90K, second at 120K, third at 160K, looking at the progression I may be due in the next 10K.
Well after a hundred and 60,000 miles and 15 years of ownership my starter died. I have gotten down to the lower intake manifold. This is where I'm having a problem. I removed the six fasteners however the lower intake will not come off. What is the easiest way to get this lower intake manifold off. Rubber mallet does not work. Any ideas?
Update: I realized that no V8 engine has just six fasteners! I found the other four! I can see the starter! Now, getting out is another task I'll complete tomorrow !

They were located on the sides of the intake but the hole was covered in grime that I did not see them. After cleaning the holes and vacuuming out the dirt they were accessible.
I also did not change the knock sensors since they were good and I feel I could get back in there in 30 minutes if they act up later.
＋１ for this. It's made of a ceramic piece and quite seldom to fail among Toyota cars. In old days there used to be problems caused by the poor metal deposition at the surface of the ceramic. It was quite improved and after that, I have never experienced any problem regarding the sensor itself.
