That's about right, $5.7-5.8K is probably what the seller is expecting and that's

I agree with above post, assuming car is well maintain and up to date with service. 6k is good and fair price. I would see if he let it go for 5.5k. Good luck

$6000 is a good deal if the car has never been wrecked, so you want to do the equivalent of a carfax on it to verify that, except we have recently learned that carfax is either inept or crooked, so instead run an Autocheck on it (more accurate carfax competitor)

When a car gets that old, it's all about maintenance and condition. Does the car have a documented maintenance history SINCE NEW? It is not possible to "undo" deferred maintenance. Is an expensive maintenance service due or overdue? Have transmission, differential, cooling system, brake fluids been replaced on a regular basis? Has the timing belt and all ancillary parts been replaced in the past 6 years or 90,000 miles? How many owners has the car had? That can be an indication of how well it was maintained. Does everything work? No audio system problems, hood struts good, no dash warning lights, brake pads good? No vibrations at highway speeds? All exterior lights working? No PS pump leaks? No unseen damage underneath the car? Windshield OK with no cracks or severe pitting? Has the windshield been replaced? - they can be in sorry shape after 14 years.

I wouldn't worry about minor collisions if the damage has been repaired by a reputable body shop that understands these cars. My 2000 LS400 has had $12,000 in body work in the past two years due to minor collisions and an OEM windshield replacement at the Lexus dealer's body shop - the car is still wonderful, looks better than ever and drives like new.

i just called the owner, he said he will out of home about 2 weeks by tomorrow, he wanted me come today, but i don't have any1 go with me. Maybe 2 weeks later, i will go there and take a look with my mechanic. By the way, i asked him about timing belt and condition of the car, he said, it is in fantastic condition, timing belt was done at 125k . he also said Leather has been routinely wiped down with leather conditioner several times a year which has contributed to the outstanding condition of the seats and interior. Maybe a good car .

I would be wary if the seller used a word like "fantastic" to describe the condition of the timing belt. It is necessary to replace the idlers, tensioner and water pump when the timing belt is replaced since failure of one of those components is what causes the timing belt to "fail" 99% of the time.

Ask to see receipts or records not just for this but for all prior maintenance even if it just a log book showing DIY fluid changes and repairs. These cars can be money pits if they have not been properly maintained or have been abused. Leather wiped down a few times a year? BFD! For a car that old, I would ask for records showing that the brake fluid has been changed regularly per the maintenance schedule.

When I eventually sell my 00 LS400, I will be able to show records for all maintenance, repairs and body work for its entire life - even for every gas fill-up, tire rotation and wiper blade change. That is the kind of car to look for.

+1 to what Kansas has mentioned. Verifying a regular maintenance schedule will alleviate many concerns because there is a detailed history.
