eBay may be your best bet to find a used one. I doubt if you will find a dealer that has one of these in stock. My local dealer doesn't even keep common trim fasteners in stock for my 00 LS400.

If you have a friend with a 98-00 GS or LS with OEM nav, ask if you can pull his hard drive and try it in your LS -- that's how a friend and I sometimes troubleshoot problems ... we switch components between our cars.
I found a used (with warranty) nav box as outlined shown in your earlier post. Since my data is '98 am I correct to presume I would be replacing the same? The damage could have been done by the moisture in the trunk. When I got back off deployment there was 1/4" of water in the spare trunk well due to rain / condensation where I left the car. Moisture could have corrupted the hard drive / unit. Thoughts?

If "nav box" means the trunk mounted navigation ECU, I think all 98-00 nav ECU/hard drive units are interchangeable. If your "new" nav ECU doesn't come with a 2004 hard drive, maybe you can find one on eBay.

Water in the trunk might have caused your nav ECU to fail. A friend's OEM phone ECU in the trunk of his 99 LS failed causing his radio to be in permanent mute mode -- maybe water caused it to fail too. Water + electricity = Bad.

Your trunk lid gasket likely needs replacing if you are getting water in your trunk. Mine's leaking too -- I need to replace the gasket ... out of sight out of mind. LS400 trunk lid gaskets don't seem to last more than about five years before they become compressed and allow water in.

Yes the nav box I am refering to is the one in the trunk. Don't all nav boxes come with the original 1998 map data? The hard drive would just be used to update map date to 2004. I do not have any hard drive installed where the door opens. I figure this is common for a 1998-2000 that did not by a hardrive seperately.

Yea - Car sat in Florida military lot while I was deployed. Will look at replacing the gasket. Have almost 257,000 miles. Would like to make it to 300,000. Can you get the rubber gasket from the dealer? How would you remove / install?

Attached is the ebay link of the model I am looking at.

Advice / thought appreciated

OK - I have pulled out the card, it looks fine (physically), anyone know how to test if it is the card or the Nav box?

Default Update

The used Ebay part has lasted 2 years. Lately the nav has shown a "cold for disk" error, and this week a couple of times it has read "check hard drive" then the screen goes blank and the radio, menu buttons are inoperable. I will pull the hard drive tomorrow and look for any viable signs of damage.

Does anyone have experience with the radio, menu buttons going inoperable?

Pulled hard drive and inspected. It looks fine.
Wonder if my alternator is going, lack of juice is why the nav and radio are shutting down after 5 minutes of driving.

Any thoughts - is there a relay that could be going bad that anyone has experienced?

Ruled out alternator - - sometimes the radio works, then quits, nav not responding. Any thoughts?

Question LS400 Hard drive replacement

Jim Mayer's instructions on replacing this is great.

How can I tell buying a used hard drive from the internet if it is a working unit or not?? Any other known sources. I have found 2, one for $150 and one for $235. Any info appreciated. The dealer wanted $1600 to replace and another $256 to update to 2005 level for the Nav. Thanks. DR

Default 1998 LS400 Nav Hard Drive Replacement

Thanks Hiroshi 12. You are right and I already have a good world wide Garmin device that gets free updates every year. As long as the loss of this hard drive doesn't bother the other air conditioning, climate, audio, or main menu items then I don't really need it.

Many apologies for bringing this up from the depths of the long since dead forum posts, but does anyone have an actual part number for the hard drive unit itself or even better, a source that actually has one in stock. Sewell's is long since gone so there's that.
I'm restoring my 98 and would really like to get the factory nav up and running, even if it's last update was almost 15 years ago. I don't care, I just want it to work for nostalgia's sake. The car isn't my DD but we've got history.

Many thanks!
