The rear o2 sensors are on this pipe...does that change anything? On the south side of this assembly is there a cat or a resonator?

Default The end of the story

Went to a local custom exhaust shop and had a Y pipe made..$100.00 done in 2 hours...His suggestion when i'm ready, replace the 2 resonators with mufflers and run straight pipes to the back..seems reasonable to me.

Post What is the lifespan of the custom pipes?

Hi,

What is the lifespan of the custom pipes made in the shops? Do they need to be stainless steel? I had a dual exhaust made for my old acura legend a long time ago and the pipes began to rust quickly. This is for my future reference for my 2LS, for I do have a leak in the egr pipe. Who knows, it might be an exhaust leak. Let me know.

A lexus Y pipe retails for 500.00 and there is no aftermarket version...A used one would run 150.00-200.00 with shipping..So having a custom made one for a C note isn't too shabby.

Brad,

How long will the pipe last? Will it rust?

Well it took 18 years for the OEM pipe to die (13 years based on LI, NY) I have no idea how long this pipe will last but i would hope several years at least...I do live in Daytona Beach 2 blocks from the ocean so a shortened life span may be applied.

An OEM Lexus Y pipe for a 1991 is approximately $1900.00 You need to be careful with some of the aftermarket pipes. I had a local Meineke shop replace mine with an aftermarket. The pipe didn't have the exact same bends in it as the OEM. This caused a howling noise from 62 to 66 mph. They took the pipe off and straightend it a bit which eliminated some of the howling but not all. This is a double wall pipe I believe. This made it difficult for them to try and heat and straighten it to get the bends similar to the OEM. I was charged around $850 for the Y pipe and install.

Price for the complete exhaust on mine if I remember correctly was about $4800 OEM... I think I see the discrepancy... Mine has a catalytic converter that is part of the front Y pipe, some don't... Here's an OEM quote for the Y pipe. Two different styles within the same years... List and Selling Price for each...

Front pipe, ls400, federal 91-92 $2,035.42 $1,730.11 (Catalytic Style)

Front pipe, ls400, federal 90-94 $480.96 $408.82

hey, i have a 1LS and i recently had my exhasust done and made the stupid mistake of gettin rid of the y/cat pipe and decided to run 2 seperate dual pipes from the 2 headers all the way back. BIG MISTAKE! i lost ALOT backpressure and with thtat, alot of torque and alota power and on top of that MPGs! so now im looking for a used oem y pipe :-/ would a magnaflow x pipe or y pipe which runs for like $85 do the trick? or would it not work becaust its not a cat and its free flow? or should i just wait til i find a used oem y cat?

a "true dual" setup? meaning that the left and right bank dont crossover anywhere?

and what size tubing did you use?

backpressure has more to do with pipe size than with OEM cats/mufflers.

piping is the right size, have an X-pipe installed, the crossover will help immensely.
