Default Timing Belt tensioner change?

Is it necessary to change the timing belt tensioner when you do the timing belt?
Thanks, David

not a must, but in my case, once the opened up the motor, they found out that it was a bit worn, bearing had some play, so make sure they are good before you finish the job.

Yeah,
I would change it too. It is the ONLY thing holding the belt tight all of these miles. The hydraulic piston is separate from the bearing assembly part of the tensioner, but they go and in hand.

Change them both for peace of mind.

Definitely change it when doing the timing belt. It's too much money to have to go back in and change it if it fails. Also do the idler pulleys and cam and crank seals. Also recommended is to change the water pump.

I wonder that if the t-belt is changed at the dealer if they normally "automatically" install the tensioner and seals? The 1991 LS400 I am likely buying had the t-belt replaced at the dealer 13K ago. However, the guy that has it now did not have it done and he was not sure. They did charge $1200., so I assume it was changed. Thanks.

They don't automatically change the seals although I am unsure about the tensioner. I wouldn't worry about it.

Does anyone have a part # for this tensioner?
90-94 LS model.

Think I now have this straight.
13540-50030 Tensioner (pinky finger resemblance)
13503-0F010 Idler Pulley, #2, Left (round bearing) oem by Koyo
13505-50022 Idler Pulley, #1, Right (has pivot mounting point) oem by NSK

All of these parts make up a timing belt kit. They should all be changed, no question.

When I was in there I noticed that I had to change the left camshaft pully. It was ruined when the water pump went out on my 1990 LS400 (140000 miles).

Left camshaft PULLEY 13056-50011 $75.38

Since I had the alternator off I decided to take a lot at the contact bushing in it. It also needed to be changed. To change it takes 5 min.

Alternator bushing HOLDER 27370-75060 $13.82

I ordered from Irontoad.com

Note:

The parts total was around $1100.00

If you have any questions I'll be glad to help.

This website is a great resource.

My LS400 runs great!

jdmacken,
Always nice to include OEM part #'s!!
Was this the first timing belt change on your 90?

Were you having issues with your Fan bracket support or was that purely preventative?

Cool

Yes, most of the extra was purely preventative.

In my situation:

After I opened up the motor, using the Lexus factory repair manual (testing to their specs) this is what would have been necessary:

1.) Timing belt 13568-59045---$59.01

2.) Water pump 16100-50023-83---$100.82

3.) o-ring 96761-35035---$2.61

4.) o-ring 96761-24019---$2.40

5.) Timing idler pulley no.2 13503-0F010---$64.98 (mine was O.K.)

6.) Timing idler pulley no.1 13505-50022---$112.26 (mine was O.K.)

Car specific additional broken parts:

7.) Left camshaft PULLEY 13056-50011 $75.38

Since I was there, but these were "O.K."

1.) Timing belt tensioner 13540-50030---$41.13 (mine was O.K.)

2.) Fan bracket w/bearing 16307-50011---$198.22 (mine was O.K.)

4.) Thermostat 90916-03129---$14.00 (mine was O.K.)

6.) Thermostat gasket 16325-62010---$4.07 (mine was O.K.)

7.) Front Crank seal 90311-A0001---$7.32 (mine was O.K.) dry

8.) Cam seals 90311-38036---$6.40 each (2) (mine was O.K.) dry

9.) Alternator bushing HOLDER 27370-75060 $13.82 (mine was O.K.) 3/4 worn

Tune up:

1.) Spark plugs 90919-01178-83---$6.82 each (8) (needed)

2.) Spark plug wire set 90919-22262---$119.18 (mine was O.K.)

3.) Distributor cap 19101-50020---$15.39 each (2) (needed)

4.) Distributor rotor button 19102-50020---$8.58 each (2) (needed)

Could change at any time:

1.) Radiator hose no.1 16571-50021---$20.02 (mine was O.K.)

2.) Radiator hose no.2 16572-50020---$39.18 (mine was O.K.)

3.) Serpentine belt 90916-02586---$38.73 (mine was O.K.)

I have read that the fan bracket went bad on a member and that they wished they would have changed it then. I am glad I checked the alternator. They are durable and the only typical replaceable part is the bushing. Hopefully it will last a long time. I thought to my self "these are great cars better to do it right the first time"

This was the first timing belt change for the 1990 Lexus LS400 (140000 miles)

In my case it was the water pump that went bad and ruined the timing belt.

All my parts I ordered from Irontoad.com (found them through this website)
They saved me a couple hundred dollars. No tax and shipping rates are good.

For example after I order the first batch of parts and then noticed I needed a few more:
Local dealer charges:
Left camshaft PULLEY 13056-50011 $140
Alternator bushing HOLDER 27370-75060 $38
plus tax = $192
Iron toad charges:
Left camshaft PULLEY 13056-50011 $75.38
Alternator bushing HOLDER 27370-75060 $13.82
plus 2 day shipping= $120
That was just those two parts. Hopefully Iron toad will not read this and raise their prices. I think they are a great vendor and I will use them from now on.

Hope this helps. Keep asking questions it is the only way to go.

Jeff

I went thru virtually that same list when I did my first TB change on my 94 back when it had 168,000 & the Fan Bracket bearing seized.

Here is a good deal on a replacement from a California based Dealer.
I see numerous other places where the Irontoad prices can be improved upon, not to be critical.
-------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.factorylexusparts.com/ser...ORY-FAN/Detail

THS IS A BRAND NEW FACTORY LEXUS FAN BRACKET priced at $155.00
THIS IS WHAT THE FAN CLUTCH MOUNTS TO. THIS LOOKS MUCH LIKE A WATER PUMP WITH A BEARING HUB AND ALL. THE BEARING IS WHAT GOES OUT ON THESE. VERY POPULAR REPLACEMENT PART FOR THE LS400.
FITS LS400 1990 - 1997

FACTORY PART # 16307-50011
I ALSO STOCK THE ONE FOR LS400 1998 - 2000

ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE E-MAIL

A good rule of thumb is to try & find out who the OEM was on the compenent that came on your LS.

Example: Nippondenso 10PA20C AC Compressor

Spark Plug Wires: NGK TE132s (LS400 app) are available for $88.00
Idler bearing #1 (Koyo) & idler bearing #2 (NSK) can be purchased for under $100.00 combined.

I think you can get even better deals when bought as a TB kit.
-------------------------------

Sewell Lexus seems to be more receptive to give even more advantageous pricing the larger your order becomes.
A $1000.00 parts order will get their attention!!

Does anyone know the Toyota Sealant that should also be on this list?
It is used around a cooling line thru the intake manifold.
