Default Am I nuts for thinking about buying a 96 LS400 with 198k on it?

car is MINT! looks like it has 50k on it. Leather looks great not even 1 crack or rip. paint looks new not one ding scratch etc. garage kept fully loaded Nakamichi, chrome wheels, sunroof, etc... a folder of reciepts going back to 1998. all major wear items replaced in the last 3 years timing belt, alt, battery, hoses, belts, tie rods etc...

Asking $5500 firm.. I only saw it did not drive it yet. should I go back and test drive it? or keep looking.. I have not seen one this clean in 6 months of looking and it has records to back it up and garage kept. I know the miles are high, however I drive only 20-25 miles a day tops. sorry no pics.. is the price high for the miles? need input soon..thanks

I'm not up to speed on current pricing, so I can't comment on that. However, if it truly is in the condition you describe then it should be an excellent buy provided the price is right. Buy with confidence.

I didn't bat an eye when buying a 310,000 mile '90 LS400 for $3500. Bluebook was $4200 and it was in decent shape.

ttR2 you are one brave man!! 310k yikes hey if it last 50-60 for 3k it's paid it self off. It should run to 400k easily.. best of luck!!

I would buy it in a heartbeat after seeing how well-built these cars are. I picked up my '92 LS400 with 224k for $2,000. I was super nervous about buying a car with such high mileage, but after I drove it I was sooo impressed with how well it drove and felt. 6 months and 10,000 miles later it still drives great and has zero problems. I don't think this car will ever die.

after reading the faq list I just want a newer and newer model
97 added some nice stuff like cowl reinforcement, extra plugs for charging phone and side airbags. argh why didn't they do that in 96

98-00 is my goal however they are $$$ cant believe a 10 year old car with 100k still sells for 10-15k.. I will take a 00 with Navi and all the works..

Forget the OEM nav in the 98-00 - they are very crude by today's standards. Costco has a widescreen Garmin for less than $300 this week - far more advanced than the 98-00 OEM nav.

Mount a similar aftermarket nav by the radio and you will be all set.

Precisely, fatboyq. If I get a couple of years out of it (I'm sure I'll get MUCH more than that) I got my $3500 worth, and the wife is damn happy not driving her Geo Metro anymore :-)

The 96 sounds like a solid deal - post pics. For the record I would buy it for that price with the mileage. They are built to last for over twice that without rebuilds, etc. Mine has more miles and I have no concerns about its reliability because I take care of it. It sounds like this owner has done the same. Sad for me think that I couldn't get $6,000 for mine will all the work I have done to it. Guess I will have to keep it.

Thanks for all the words of advise

my other options are
1. 99 BMW 328i 5 speed loaded with 150k- 7k
2. 95 BMW 325I 5 speed loaded mint M3 clone. 120k- 4500

I will miss driving a stick if I get the Lexus, however I know that car will last longer than the BMWs, I BMW would be a blast to drive i.e. handling wise.

all 3 cars are mint and have all paper work.

I got an offer for $3500 for my 01 ZX3 Focus so I will not have to dig too deep into my saving account. the only this is that the Foucus has a new clutch, Michelin tires, brakes, tranny and timing belt and only 80k on it. Going from a 01 to a 96 is like a 5 year leap backward and going from 80k to almost 200k miles. Sometime I wonder why I do what I do.

I would definitely go for it. I bought my '96 with 250k for a little less than that.

With a service history like that and the way the car looks..I'd say is a good deal. Most the rest will be second or third owners where history may iffy. Go for it.
