Default MPG from Vacation in 99 LS400

I recall reading/posting about MPG using this intake mod and that intake mod, and wanted to finally post some real world figures from a long vacation I just got back from. I drove approx about 1100+ miles round trip from eastern PA to as far south as Beaufort NC and back up. Stayed in Buxton NC for 8 days so there was so extra driving back and forth to towns.

I had the Jbrady mod with some basic aluminum heat shield and headlight seal removed, 93 octane, 2 full fuel fillups and another half tank of gas that my wife put in 89 octane (I was in the bathroom damn her ! hah)

Averaged it all together 25 tank one, 24 tank two, 26 tank 3 (half tank)
Probably 70/30 highway/rural driving. 75-80 on the interstates.

So yes its exciting to see 35-40 mpg on the highway in cruise control as I first thought but in the end on a real trip you still will only get 25-27mpg tops. I took the PA->DE->Bay Bridge Tunnel->VA Beach->Outer Banks (8 days)->Ferry to Ocracoke then to Cedar Island->Beaufort NC->Back up Route 17 through NC and back the same way on the Bay Bridge etc. I am sure some of you are familiar with the routes and how fast you can go in those areas typically.

I don't think I did too bad 25mpg averaged out.
Didn't have a chance to take pics but since I got home on that last half tank what is left I am down to 23 mpg since driving short distances to work down here lowers the mileage of 26 since I got back. Around here driving 1 mile back and forth to work and food shopping I get 20mpg avg consistently.

Just posting this as some FYI for those who want to compare.

Thanks

Well I don't have baseline without mod to compare but either way I think its just fine. Engine is 69k miles and just had the drive belt changed because it was dry rotted and was causing a squeaking sound especially with the A/C on.. it doesn't do it now at all and is very quiet.

That is some good information from your long road trip. For the past 3 months I have averaged 23-24 MPG per tank driving to work. It is 80/20 highway/city with some Houston traffic. With over 190,000 miles I am very happy with these numbers. I have an airbox mod and can say now that if it increases mileage over stock it is such a small difference for me - under .5 MPG - but hey it sounds better though no doubt. For you since you have the vvti motor I am not surprised with hte better mileage.

Man, you guys are lucky. I've been averaging 17mpg in my LS400 lately. The best I've seen is 20mpg from it.

Good point - driving habits obviously are the key to mileage. Mine is mostly on the highway and I rarely exceed 75 MPH - If I drove agressive and fast on the highway I would get less than 20 for sure.

I guess when I'm on the freeway I tend to go a little fast. 80mph is pretty standard.

Technically, that will reduce your mileage ever so slightly...
