Since there is no headlight gasket on the 1LS, where would the cold air come from (besides the snorkel)?

Sorry to revive this, it's just bugging me. I've poured over the information and I still don't see where the cold air comes from on the 1ls. In jtj's thread the two plastic panels that he removes, one behind the headlight and the other leads to the fender, have no access to open air. So either I'm missing something or the only improvement you can reap from a bfi on a 1ls is a cool sound. I'm not complaining, the opposite in fact-you guys are awesome, I just want to find a way to get some real benefits here.

really no way to make a BFI because of all the components around the intake area. u could try the Jbrady mod, where u cut out the front of the airbox and maybe that'll help a little bit but other than that u mite need to cut into the body area for more air.

But why, hacking a hole in the front of the airbox is supposed to let in cold air rushing in from around the headlight, which is only possible because of the removable headlight gasket on the 2ls, which is not present on the 1ls.

Just looking at the mod JTJerryls400 performed, it's more of a ram-air intake than a cold air intake. There isn't really much of an area there for the intake to get cold air and I'd be surprised if it added much power at all. It would be better to remove the factory airbox and make some ducting to go down to the bottom of the engine bay and install a cone-type air filter. Of course, with such a mod, I would definately install a water bypass valve.

Unless I can find a viable way to make a bfi I think I'll stick with the stock setup.

The only way I can think of to do that would be to make the intake hole on the snorkel larger (wider) and add more slats to make the air less turbulent.

I think that is the bracket that holds the headlight in place, not the gasket. The gasket is made of rubber, not plastic like the bracket.
