New Member, going to buy a Lexus LS
 

Hello, and thanks for letting me join the forum. I am a Insurance and Financial Services advisor in Southeastern NC, and I do a lot of driving. 50k miles a year worth. I decided to try a lexus after riding with my cousin's husband in his 95 LS, and loving it. Quietest car I've ever been in, with the smoothest ride, too. Well, anyway, I have been driving a Lincoln Town Car, decent car, but a little too floaty. Also have a M-B 560SEL, a real piece of work. Before the T/C, daily driver was a Cadillac Deville, put 190k on it before it bit the dust.

I have an associate who owns a used car lot. She repo'd a 92 LS400. White with tan leather, gold package, Nakachimi Stereo, keyless, the works. 136k miles. Cold AC, no lights on. Because she knows I've been looking one, she will sell it to me for the outstanding balance on the note. 2,300.00. It runs good, it sounds good. Looks good, too. What should I look for to be wrong, and is it a good deal? How many MPG should I expect? Is premium gas necessary?

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Check if you can that the TB and water pump have been done, and check the power steering pump for leaks, that can lead to expensive repairs (often seen on the 1st gens).

MPG probably about 16/24....always run premium.

Different opinions on the gas quality, but premium is recommended. I think most of us use premium. Mileage will depend a lot on the right foot pressure, but with prudent driving, should be 25 or so on the highway, where you will probably be quite a lot.

Without pics, the price sounds good. After purchase, have a dealer pull the service records to see what has been done. Some things to look for include the timing belt/water pump (@ 90K intervals), suspension (especially front), and engine/transmission mounts.

Etex is right on - the biggie for me if I was looking would be the timing belt - that can cost upwards of $1,000. Normally they are changed around 100,000 miles. It sounds like it is in good shape. I have a 95 and get around 24 MPG avg. per tank (premium only). Post some pics and welcome to CL!

when i bought my 92 i filled it up with regular unleaded and drove 400 miles and still had 1/4 tank left ! call any lexus dealer with the VIN and they will have the service records if it was serviced through lexus/toyota. thats what i did when i was looking around for mine and every car but one had service records.
