Default Bulb or Ballast?

Hi,

I have a ´98 LS400 with factory HID and my passenger side HID-beam just went out. Before this happening there was a colour difference between the bulbs and I remember sometimes the passenger side HID not firing up.

What´s the easiest way to tell if I should be shopping for a new
bulb or new ballast ? How hard is it to change the bulb (any tutorials for
that) ?

Thanks

It sounds like the ballast; however, an easy test would be to just swap the
D2R bulbs from left to right and see if the problem moves or stays on the suspect ballast side.

The color change leads me to suspect that it's the bulb that needs to be replaced. Just do as CK6Speed recommended, and that'll give you the answer.

OEM bulbs are cheap on ebay, shouldn't run more than $80-100/pair.

Going to try to swap the bulbs between sides, haven´t
had the time to do that yet.

How hard is it to change the bulbs? I thought you
have to get the whole front bumper off to do it (the
"stealership" told me this.

Should I be worried about some serious voltage or
just be happy with getting the battery neg off ?

And thanks again.

Took the old bulbs out today. Wasn´t really hard after all. Just the battery
and the intake stuff off and there you go.

My left side HID bulb was literally blown up and now left side
headlamp has small bits of glass all over. Have to figure out
how to get the bits out.
